D3300 Command Dial

I recently purchased a D3300 so I could get into some photography. I am a complete amateur, so initially I was just using it in the automatic mode. But as said, I am looking to get into photography, so after some reading I took the plunge and moved it into Aperture Mode so I could start to play around. Alas, the command dial doesn't seem to be working for me! It rotates, but nothing changes.

I am assuming this is a fault, but before I go through the repair process, I just wanted to ask and see whether anyone could think of another reason it might not be working? As said, I have very limited experience with cameras so wonder if I've missed something basic.

Any help appreciated!

I think the 3300 uses a similar set up to the 5200.

The command dial, by default, on the 5200 alters the shutter speed. If you press the info (i) button on the back of the camera it should display 3 digital dials. The command dial alters the left one (shutter speed)

On my 5200 there is a function button that you hold down and then use the command dial to change aperture ISO, and there is a +/- button on the top somewhere that you hold down to change aperture.

I should note however, that I always make sure I have pressed the information button before changing any settings otherwise the button shortcuts/command dial input does not seem to work.

EDIT - just looked at some screen shots of the D3300 - it should function the same as the 5200. Hold the fn button on the front of the body (whilst the info screen is on) and then use command dial to change ISO (the right circle on info screen). Hold down the +/- key on the top of the camera by the shutter release button (whilst info screen is on) then use command dial to set aperture (the centre circle on info screen). You will notice a little emblem next to that button of an aperture on some of the D3300's. Then the command wheel on its own when the info screen is up controlls the shutter speed in increments (the left circle on the info screen).

Thanks for the reply, greatly appreciated.

I've tried holding down the +/- and I do get the flashing aperture circle, but alas rotating the command dial does nothing. I suspect it might be buggered. Disappointing.

No. Alas, nothing changes. I think I've proven beyond doubt that its the dial though. I made a recording, and apparently you can use the command dial to advance/reverse 10s. When I playback the video, the dial does nothing.

Thanks again for your help. Looks like its off to Nikon for repair.
