D5 broken.

Hello, my d5 packed in earlier, it made a funny noise then just stopped and wouldnt start up again. I took it to bits and found the bearing housing inside the rotor looked a bit wonkey, im guessing its broken off inside or summat. It starts up ok out of the loop just pumping water into a jug but its a bit noisey so the rotor definately needs replacing. I found replacement rotors for £50+postage or i can buy the complete pump for 55 from the store lol which i obviously ordered.

The only question i have is could i have overloaded the pump causing the pressure to break the rotor? I had 3 thick rads, a cpu block and 2 gpu blocks in the loop but i added another slim restrictive rad right before it packed in. The flowrate was fine but im wondering if the extra restrictions were too much for the impeller, if so i would add another d5 but i dont want to if i dont have to.

It might just have been the pumps time, its 10 years old so i wouldnt blame it for packing in but if there is a few of you running a similar setup out there and its working ok on one d5 i might just try using 1 pump for now.

I've never heard of D5s packing in. Those things are indestructible!

However, after ten years I'd say its probably wear and tear that got the better of it.

I wouldn't worry about the restriction in your loop, one will be able to handle it.

Having said that, I run two since I like the redundancy.

Cool, well ill give it a crack with one again then. I've never liked the idea of redundancy myself, i would prefer to put the money into more/better hardware and cross my fingers

Tbh the thing looks shiny and new inside, theres no visible wear on it, just the little groove the bearing sits in has moved off to the side, it looks like the plastic has just failed. The sound it made right before it stopped was like i had dropped a screw in there, first thing i checked was my kill coils, theyre both in place and whole still, then i checked the fins on the rotor and theyre like new, no scratches or dints so theres no signs anything went through it.

Still got the receipt for it, only cost me £60 all them years ago, so not bad value and hopefully ill get another 10 from the new one.
