Just browsing the net and came across a high street store website that has is offering the following:

Nikon D60
AF-S DX Nikkor VR 18-55mm Lens

for £380.

Is that price any good?

I am after something suitable for beginner but won't limit me as my skill improves. The D40 is cheap enough however I get the impression it may be limiting as my skill improves.

Got a friends wedding on Sat and they are worried as they haven't heard anything from their photographer yet. I've been after a camera for ages but just never really bothered so thought this would be the ideal time.

Was hoping to pick it up tomoz if the price isn't that bad! Dont mind paying a little over the odds fir it as I will get it straight away.

Suggestions for alternatives around the same price if this camera isn't great?

Also, after recommendations for a tripod/bag for it.

Regarding the SDHC cards you can buy with them, i've loads of 8gb microSD cards + SD adapter are these acceptable?

I'll also need extra batteries & charger, any suggestions?

The D60 is excellent, so is the Canon 1000D.
Some people will waffle on about the D60's inability to auto focus with older Nikon lenses but there's hardly a shortage of ones it will focus with so I'd totally ignore that, the Nikon flash system and the active D lighting are both market leading in their ability, however the Canon has a greater feature set and is every bit as accomplished, have a feel of both, buy the one that feels nice in the hand.
The Canon's a bit faster for sports shooting, the Nikon has proper spot metering etc etc

There's £30 cashback from Nikon on the D60 with lens at the moment

thanks for the input :)

Main areas of photography will be social events, wildlife and scenery.

I will have a play with both and see what they are like :)

It's worth looking at the rest of the range too, as you will accumulate Canon or Nikon compatible gear (lenses and flashes) that will stick you to the brand, I think Nikon is a touch stronger at the moment in the mid range models (D90/D300/D700) but next year Canon might be, the "big two" are constantly swapping the baton.

hmm, I've just looked at some comparisons of the 2 and from the bits I actually understand there seems very little in it.

I prefer the look of the 1000D but think the D60 will be slightly better suited to what I want.

All I've got to do now is to talk the missus into letting me get it and I can go out tomorrow and have a play with them both. :D

I've having this toss up myself, I'm gonna nab either one this weekend at a certain high street store. So i'll give you my feedback on the cams after i have a play with them in store on sat.

I've got a D60 and would consider swapping it for a D40...they're not as far apart as you may think, and the 10MP sensor of the D60 doesn't seem to perform as well at higher ISOs as the D40's 6MP sensor. Also, the D40 has a faster flash-sync speed. The decision isn't as simple as it may seem.

edit: goddamn that sounds like I've copied a Ken Rockwell rant...

I'm considering a D60, all my friends have got Nikons so I think its choice for me so we can share lenses lol
My housemate says the Nikon lenses with the motors in them are faster at focusing than the Cannon counter parts, I don't know if its true, but hes a rally photographer so I'm taking his advice lol

Lol. I agree with you though. I would go for a D40 over a D60, as the extra money isn't worth it imo. A Second hand D40 can be had for silly low prices nowadays. Half tempted to get one as a second body.

The D90 rammed home how poor the D60's high ISO performance is for me...granted the D90's ISO800/1600 performance is exemplary, but now I've seen the difference the D60 is relegated to daytime use only

whats the difference with ISO's?

I think its got something to do with the quality of the image. And under what circumstances would you use the higher ISOs that the D60 has issues with?

It's one of 3 things that controls the exposure (ISO, aperture, shutter speed). For digital photography it's basically the amount of amplification applied to the charge on the sensor, with more gain = more noise. Different cameras give differing amounts of noise at equivalent sensor gains (ISO rating is standardised).

thanks mud.

How does the 1000D perform agaisnt the D60/D40 regarding ISO quality?

Sorry for all the questions but I will be picking this up tomorrow so need to go fully armed with as much info as possible :D

argh!!

i've been up all night reading reviews and i am more confused now than before!

:(

wish i could just get the extra cash for the 450D and be done with it.

I believe it's a little better than the D60, though that's just based on reviews.

Don't get me wrong, the D60 is a decent camera...but if I were buying again I'd probably get the D40 if I could find one new for a nice price.

I wouldn't agonise too much, you'll quickly find yourself buying lenses far more expensive than the body anyway!

I know the feeling, I've not read anything about poor high iso quality, on other sites, and most people are raving about the D60 :o

It depends what you're comparing it to. I've got a D40 and a D300 and there's just no comparison on high ISO quality - the D300 is in a completely different league.

It's not that the D40/60 is awful at high ISO's, it's still usable, it's just nowhere near as good as higher level cameras.
