Looks like the D7000 might be the way forward although how long is it till the D300 replacement is released? Might be worth holding on.

The D300 replacement, almost certainly called a D400, wont be released until next year. Probably available before the olympics.

Just a quick caveat regarding the RP review linked to, he's comparing the D7000 to the D300 (non S). From my comparisons with my D300 vs a D90 I used to own as well, the D90 (which has an updated sensor compared to the D300, like the D300s) was at least half a stop better in the noise department compared to the D300.

So, the D300s will be closer in performance to the D7000 if noise is your thing. Ok, it doesn't change the results much, but just so you know what you're comparing (or not!).

This choice comes down to budget and handling really doesn't it? I would love the D7000 resolution and DX noise capabilities, but I just don't like the layout, so could never be happy with it even if it's better in the IQ department than a D300s.

Sure it's a personal preference I know but I just think they're horrible things, I don't want a massive bulky camera, I just want it 10% bigger with space for all the controls the pro bodies have. Adding a big chunk to the bottom of the camera to hold an extra battery I don't need doesn't appeal much to me.

Worse still if you've used a camera with an integrated grip (D3 etc), makes them seem even more clunky going back to the add on grips. Lens mount isn't central, etc etc

Rant over. I just really despise the things, variation of pointless unless you have giant hands in my opinion.

Know something we don't? By all accounts it could be next month. Depends what exactly the D400 is though, all sorts of rumours flying round (D2 style body with integrated grip etc).

Lol, guess you don't appreciate the added comfort and less camera shake

Only use one battery though, as the D700 is a little too heavy as it is imo.

I've got to agree, I always used to grip my bodies and then I bought a 1d3. I have a grip for the 7D but I just cannot bring myself to use it, everything just feels wrong compared to a 1D body. I don't know if the grips are slimmer for the Nikon bodies?

I don't have big enough hands to have an issue with comfort, the D200/300/700 sits nicely in my hands (as does the 5DII), Even with the 70-200 it handles nicely, though the 70-200s sweet spot is on a D3s really (which is an example of how a portrait grip can work well and is actually more compact than a D300/D700+MB-D10) . Anything longer I'd have on a tripod I think anyway.

For camera shake not sure how it'd help as it just adds weight and bulk? That said I've got pretty good technique and get usably sharp results at 1/15th reliably but if it works for you then I guess why not.

Nothing, just hints from people like Thom Hogan. Very little rumours or information on a D400 this year. No clear sensor choice.

It is not clear if any DSLR will be realeased this year TBH.

Reworked Sony 24MP is still an option, I'm not sure Nikon can develop an entire range of sensors from scratch so I expect it'll be something like that. Lots of compromises in that though.

All speculation though as you say, I still hold out hope we'll see something this year.
