Nikon has some cash back offers on right now. I'd been looking at the D7000 since the reductions pending the D7100 coming out but now there's cash back on it, it's even more appealing.

On paper, the 5200 should be better, although reviews seems to edge it to the D7000 still.

thoughts?

I'd go with the build quality and features of the D7000 over the megapixels and flippy screen. D7000 was awesome when I had one.

D7000, or stretch to d7100 to get professional AF system.

i'd been calling around regarding stock of the D7000 and one shop who'd had a D7100 said that they preferred the D7000. Anyway, D7100 way out of budget for me. If i had that cash, i'd be tempted to go for the D600 instead.

I don't see why anyone would prefer the D7000, the D7100 is an improvement in every-way, especially the pro-level AF system, but yeah, the D7000 is still a great camera and was probably one of the best APS-C cameras ever released for general photography (only a small buffer is its only limitation).

I would definitely get the D7000 over the D5200. If you wanted to save cash I would go for a D5100, mostly because they are dirt cheap these days.

I couldn't stretch to the 7100 if I wanted to. I was pretty set on the 7000 but couldn't ignore the specs of the 5200 on paper.

Already looking at lenses to go with it now :-/

Fancy an ultra wide and a general zoom for now. Have a little 35mm and a kit lens from a d80 already. Considering the 18-200nikon and reading reviews of wides now.

18-200 is OK at travel but it doesn't really keep up with the high-res sensors, plus there is lots of distortion and the performance varies widely at different focal lengths.

I would consider simply getting the 18-105 kit lens as it is the best value for money when included with the camera. Quite sharp, useful focal range.

I use a 16-85mm for such occasions, this is the sharpest and best built wide-to tele zooms. I like everything about it, just a little pricy for what you are getting, but it really shows the sharpness difference on the new high res sensors. The real benefit of this kens is the 16mm, this is really quite nice and wide. Don't under estimate the difference between 16mm and 18mm, on FF these would be sold as 2 different prime lenses (24mm and 28mm), and often allows me to leave the 10-20 ultra wide angle behind.

The difference between 85mm and 200mm is actually far smaller than you would think on these lenses, especially considering the focus breathing of the 18-200mm.

Will the 18-105 be any better than the 18-135(i think that's what it is) that I have with the d80 already? Would the 150extra over the body price be better spent elsewhere?

In this case then I would probably skip the 18-105 as it won't be too different to what you have. The 16-85mm could still be a consideration because it is sharper, better built and has the nice 16mm end.

However, you have several options. The 18-135 ou have would pair well with a faster zoom, second hand Nikon 17-55mm f2.8, or one of the tamron or sigma alternatives (optically fine but poor quality control, poor build quality). Or you could invest in some primes, any of the new Nikon 1.8G primes are fantastic, the 28mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm f/1.8G are very sharp with good bokeh.

You mentioned the 18-200mm, if you want the reach then you consider a dedicated tele lens like a 70-300mm.

Just found the 18-135 doesn't auto zoom with the d7000. Stupidly considering the d600 now :-/. Although for the same price as a d600 with kit lens I can get a d7000 and two very good lenses.

Erm eh? Auto zoom?
The 18-135mm will work perfectly on a D7000.

I think perhaps you are confused but I'm not sure with what. Care to elaborate?

I don't believe the d7000 has a lens motor? And the 18-135 doesn't seem to have a motor in and would rely on the lens motor in the d80 for example

One the D7000 does have a lens motor, (although the D5200 doesn't).

And two the 18-135 is a AF-S so does have it's own motor anyway.

It is however a DX lens, so would probably only work on the D600 in crop mode.
