Balances fine on mine... Do you have the original strap and carry it round your neck and let it rest on your chest?
Personally I prefer bigger lenses for balance as you can hold the lens rather than the camera and get more grip when it's not around your neck and to the side/back. As I said its also weatherproof which means it can be used in the rain or dusty environments without issue, unlike tam rooms which break when you look at them funny. The problem with the slow lenses is when the light starts to go the fast zooms come in to their own. As an aside, while I like my 70-300 it really doesn't compare to the Sigma 120-300. I use both equally as the sigma is so blooming big and heavy but the sigma produces much nicer images, especially as you can add a TC to it and get 420mm without any perceived loss in quality.
