D80 vs 400D ??

D80 vs 30D isn't it? D50 vs 400D. D200 vs 5D. D2x vs 1D.
Well no. Not for me.

I either want to spend the extra to get the d80 *if it's worth it* or be safe and cheap and go for the 400D.

That's why I'm comparing these 2. Is the d80 worth the extra £200+ ???

I had a 40d for a week and tbh I wasnt all that impressed with the handling. The good thing is the lcd bshowing the settings all the time during shooting, but it felt a bit cheap. Its like a 20d feel compared to the 10d.

whats the price diff to get the 30d?

Would the 400D be a good camera to start off with , if you have no idea about photography?

Are you saying that for me or for you? I ask that becuase I'm not new to photography. I need this upgrade becuase my s9500 is holding me back.

Why not consider a 20D?

You can get the 20D for ~£600. TBH I'd try all three in a highstreet retailer and see what you think. Don't buy a camera purely off the back of reviews what ever you do (unless it's a dang good deal then perhaps). Get a feel for them first.

Canon seem to offer more decent low end glass, or did last time I looked. Nikon seem to be slowly progressing though. You can however find used pro glass for pretty good prices on t'bay if you're in the right place at the right time for both Canon and Nikon.

No probs :)

These are the main things that I prefer on the 20D over the 400D.

20D - Magnesium alloy body
400D - Plastic Body

20D - Quick Control Dials
400D - Push button controls

20D - 5 frames per second
400D - 3 frames per second

20D - ISO up to 3200
400D - ISO up to 1600

20D - Flash Sync : 1/250
400D - Flash Sync : 1/200

for me the biggest advantage is the 5FPS is just mind blowingly fast!!
also magnesium allow and scroll wheel is nice.

But the 30D is only £10 more. I don't get why your comparing the d80 and 400d when theres a £200 difference.

I don't know why you don't understand but I will try and explain it differently...

I want a good camera, a dSLR and my budget is not high, my budget is in the 400D range, but, if everyone here thinks the d80 is worth the extra £200 I will try and find a way to get the money and buy the d80.

A popular high street dealer has the d80 + 18-70 lens & tamron 70-300 lens on deal for £850

Otherwise I go for the cheap option of the 400D + 18-55 lens for only £530

The 30D on the other hand comes with just the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Mkii Lens for £10 more than the d80 with the 2 lenses...

Ultimately, I will have a look at a lot of cameras in the store tomorrow but I'm hoping the advice here will let me in on some insight about the cameras from the users rather than the sales agent. :)

Ive had a 20d 2 yrs now, was a nice camera, messed it up with a sensor clean though so sent to canon for repair. And bought a 400d in the meantime.

Im impressed with the 400d, the size doesnt matter that much but looks silly with my 100-400is on the end, but with smaller lenses its fine.

The pictures so far that ive took are very good, will post them when my uploadit account is working.

My sisters borrowed it a few times to and shes quite snobby about cameras and there size, she prefers metal bodys to plastic ones, and she likes it that much shes buying one. Quite cheap online £497 for the kit lens version , and if you buy with the right bit of plastic, another 5% off, so £472.

The 3 fps , doesnt bother me either, thats plenty, dont miss the extra 2fps, the lcd is nice and big and clear, and the menu system and buttons are great when you get used to them. I was lost after the 20d;,s scroll wheel. Like a fish out of water. But gav it a few days and i was fine.

I really dont know what to do about the 20d though, canon want £380 to fit a new ccd and shutter release button
