D80 vs 400D ??

I don't know why you don't understand but I will try and explain it differently...

I want a good camera, a dSLR and my budget is not high, my budget is in the 400D range, but, if everyone here thinks the d80 is worth the extra £200 I will try and find a way to get the money and buy the d80.

A popular high street dealer has the d80 + 18-70 lens & tamron 70-300 lens on deal for £850

Otherwise I go for the cheap option of the 400D + 18-55 lens for only £530

The 30D on the other hand comes with just the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Mkii Lens for £10 more than the d80 with the 2 lenses...

Ultimately, I will have a look at a lot of cameras in the store tomorrow but I'm hoping the advice here will let me in on some insight about the cameras from the users rather than the sales agent. :)

Ah sorry I misread what lens came with the £850 D80. Its a 18-135 not 18-55. You're right, the 30D is more.

have u considered maybe D70s? It is cracking camera and has many advaced functions.

Given the budget, If i had to choose between Nikon D70s vs Canon 350D/400D, I would take the D70s anyday!

Also Fujifilm S3? takes Nikon lenses.

You should go for the D80 over the 400D but the 30D over the D80. We played with all three for a 'work camera' and came away with the 30D (althouhgh before I had my eye on the D80). It's already paid for itself :D

The 30D is an awsome piece of kit (we got it with the 17-85 IS USM).

If you're gonna buy from the well known high street store that is offering the half price tamron lens, make them price match :P the 30D price is way OTT, can be had for a good £100 cheaper online, and they will match it.

i'd say the 400D isnt that much worse than the D80 especially considering the cost, you're paying for the lens more than anything else. I do believe the d80 is more 400D level than 30D level, as 30D with the same "equiv" lens is over a grand. The d200 is more 30D level, and the 5D doesnt have any competition at all from nikon.

Nikon are quite clever with their pricing though, they always make sure that their cameras fit between the canons, so that arguements like are happening in this thread will always go on :p

As far as entry level SLRs go, the 400D is the best of the bunch IMO. That with the Tamron 70-300 lens for £100 will get you started nicely, very good starter kit thatll let you see what you use, and then when you find what you're lacking lens wise you've got a lot better lens choice in the mid range with canon equipment (the F4 L range for example, 70-200 F4L <£500, 17-40 F4L <£500) vs the Nikon range.

If you can afford it though, the 30D is obviously a better camera. I have a 20D and a 30D, and they are just that bit nicer to use :)

At the end of the day though, no matter what camera you buy from the latest sub £1k offerings (400D, D80, 30D, D200) you're not gonna get a bad camera, so don't worry TOO much :)

Thanks Tom, nice advice.

I have added you to my msn messenger list if thats ok? :)

i was going to get thr 400D after selling my 350D but when comparing it to the 30D in the shop it was a no brainer - 30D anytime, the 400D feels like a toy

AP mag rating:

D80 89%
400D 84%

From the comments in the mag it seems the noise handling on the D80 is better than the 400d. If I remember correctly, the 400D noise reduction system results in a loss of detail.
