D90 problem - Please Help

Hello, all. My friend has recently returned from a holiday and his D90 has developed a problem with the display that provides metering info and the likes in the viewfinder/lens. It is still displaying some stuff although the info is just random nonsense. Has anyone heard of such a problem or know what it may point to? I should probably add that nothing happened to the camera to cause this such as a fall. The camera still works fine, it's purely a problem with the info display viewed through the viewfinder.

Any help or advice would be appreciated as we're both stumped as to what could have caused this, what the actual fault is and whether it can be fixed.

As a starting point hit the two buttons with green dots next to them simultaneously, that'll reset most things back to defaults which should make sure it isn't a setting he's changed. Then I think finding a Nikon dealer is a good bet...
