Well, on Tuesday Da missus installed her MX6 in a road sign after spinning it off a roundabout. 10/10 for style I say. She now needs a new motor.

We had the conversation from Smokey and the Bandit.

Her: Gonna need a new car
Me: *hands her a grand*
Her: Speedy car
Me: *hands her another grand*
Her: Speedier than that
Me: *sighs and hands her another grand*

So, she's got about £3k ish for something. I was thinkiing about one of this lot:

Mazda MX5 1.8i (probably a Eunos as they have Air-con)
Ford Cougar 2.5i
Honda Prelude 2.2i VTEC (hard for her to insure for some reason)
Toyota MR2 GT 2.0

Any other suggestions?

I don't think she will go wrong with an MX5. Would be my choice I think. And tell her to limit using the right pedal to the max :D

So she span a FWD MX6 off a roundabout and now you're thinking of getting her a RWD MX5 or MR2? You're a brave, brave man :p

or he has her well insured :D

MX5 should be fine choice

Are you looking at the UK models or imports? UK models are group 17, imports are usually group 19, when 99.9% of the parts are compatible between the two! Which insurer is she with, and is she part-way through a policy so can't change?

You could get a 4th gen Prelude for ~£1500, or a 5th gen for ~£3000, depending on her preferred style.

Hmmm, Fiat Coupé, nice idea. She likes the look of those but I'm really nervous about build quality and reliability. I mean, how reliable are they?

My choice would be an MX5 as parts are so easy to come by for them. Anyone think of a good reason why she shouldn't get a Eunos? They seem to have way more kit.

You should never let your woman watch smokey and the bandit.

mx5 would be my choice without doubt. You'd get brownie points for thinking of a convertable in the sun...

"I'm just thinking of your tan my dear"

Properly maintained, of course it will. Mine certainly has, and hopefully it will for a long time to come.

You have poor chase in case, but you taste in woman is exceptional. I would like to hit your misses. HARD. :D

Sorry, but she is dirty hot.

Not many reasons, Mazda dealer can be funny about supplying you parts on a Jap car, insurance will be more, history will be unknow, stupid rear foglight.

Get a nice twin turbo legacy for £3000.
But then It wont be as fast as an MR2 or a Couger because they only make 276bhp.

Cougar is a lovely looking car, has front wheel drive and fairly sturdy on the road, comes with Mondeo like reliability. They are aging a bit and Ford have a terrible terrible service (not to mention overpriced) however if you find a model that has been well kept, it will make her very happy. The 2.5 engine doesn't need the belt replacing....cos it doesn't have one! Uses some kind of chain.

Some decent examples to be had, I suggest signing up to the ukcougar forums ( http://www.ukcougarforum.com ) there are some good 2.5l cougars going at the moment.

Things to bear in mind:

- wishbones are non-Mondeo parts and expensive to replace
- lights are Cougar specific and *very* expensive to replace
- same goes with the sunroof, which you best stay clear off

They all come with air con as standard. I have a 2l myself and its a nice car.
