Da Vinci Code

Weren't the Priory of Sion a group created in the 1960s by two fraudsters?

This was one of the speculations I was referring to. The modern incarnation of the Priory was indeed a hoax. Baigent, Leigh and Lincoln were the researchers who originaly bought in to these fraudsters and brought this fake order to the publics attention. However in their second book they also exposed them as frauds so can be somewhat forgiven for their earlier mistake.

However there was indeed a true Priory of scion (a monastic order) in medieval times. Pierre Plantard used their name and faked links with the old true order to make people believe they were still around. He also concocted the ludicrous agenda of preserving the bloodline of christ.

So the answer is yes and no. Yes in that the incarnation of the priory you are referring to is indeed a hoax, but no in that there once was a real 'Priory of Scion'. The two shared no real similarities other than name however.
