dac/amp for Oppe PM-3?

yep, all chi-fi

Planars really like current, so solid state is what most people go for, OTL tube amps are all about voltage

I went Schiit multibit + Magni 3 with my HE400i and couldn't be happier.

well I probably could but it would cost a LOT :D

How are the PM3s sounding now?

Picture 40 year old single malt whiskey being poured into a very expensive glass over perfectly formed ice cubes in slow motion with sexy saxophone music in the background. That's what they sound like now. Deliciously good.

Sadly I have to give my friend his DAC back so I need a DAC. I can get an Audioquest Dragonfly black for less money than I can get a Magni, and in many people's opinion, the DAC in the Dragonfly is darker, more aggressive, and more edgy, which I like. Plus I can get it cheaper and it's not another silver box on my desk taking up space. Also, no USB cable.

Do dragonflies even do line level out? Or is it always preamped?

thoughts?

Planars love current and you get oodles of it with the Magni 2.

I'm not the one to recommend a DAC as I have the Modi Multibit on the brain, it makes my Modi 1 sound like an old cheap portable radio :D

so did I until I tried Multibit

I've used dragonflies, a $300 Arcam rPAC, and a $600 TEAC UD301. The TEAC did DSD. Yes, 25MB/s audio sounds fantastic, but if we're feeding all three dacs the same file, I struggle to hear a difference that is in my face and striking in any way. There are nuances. The most expensive DAC improved spatial imaging a bit. Was it worth 5X the price of the dragonfly? Not really. Not to me.

Also I'm not 100% sure that something like a Magni, which, although it has oodles of power, isn't exactly the most high resolution amp out there, would benefit greatly from an expensive DAC with multibit. Is it really better than sigma-delta? Or is it just snake oil syndrome where people buy something and are so convinced it's better that it actually sounds better to them?

I had a Modi & Magni 2 stack and replaced the Modi with a Modi Multibit and had no trouble hearing the improvement. Bass and sub bass were both stronger and more detailed, highs were smoother yet carried more detail and imaging all of a sudden became pin point sharp, with a lot more space around each instrument.

I eventually upgraded the Magni 2 to a Magni 3 and while there was some improvement, the differences were a lot smaller.

I guess I'll have to get the multibit :p

You won't be disappointed, sound great together with the Oppos

Early xmas pressie :D
