When it comes to resolution, the detail has to actually be there for high end headphones to be able to resolve it. So a highly resolving DAC is essential for a high quality system.

While it is true that by far the biggest difference you can make to a system is by changing the transducers (the speakers or headphones), a large part of that difference is going to be colouration or "flavour", which is more of a subjective choice than a technical one.

I have a modi 2 Uber and it's great. I didn't pay the £15 for the cables from them though, I bought ones from Amazon for £2.

So basically the Schiit stack ( modi 2/uber and magni 2/uber ) would be a good pairing for gaming and listening to music on my k712 ?

Depends on how you like your sound, the Magni 2/Uber will be bright and detailed with the AKGs, while the Vali 2 will take a little edge off while still resolving plenty of detail. You can also "tube roll" the Vali 2 to tailor the sound to your preferences, though this can get pricey if you go for the most sought after tubes.
