Hi my dad is car shopping :) and cant make his mind up it has to be first hand :P and around 13/17kish. He was worked his list down to a full spec VW Bora (55 plate) which is 13k a full spec Mazda 6 Sport(05) 16k plate and a laguna full spec (55 plate) 14k, i think the mazda as it looks the nicest ;) any ideas guys as you will know more than me :)

cheers Kevin.

Why on EARTH would he buy a brand new Bora when it was replaced 3-4 months ago with the new Jetta? It's like... buying a brand new obselete car..

Bora is going cheap hence looking at it :) the mazda is a 2.3l sport i think its over 2l anyway :), he doesnt like Ford cars :) had a old mondeo and it broke a lot

Best you remove that Mazda from your list then, as Mazda are Ford now :) Mondeo is a very reliable car, I find it incredibly amusing somebody would pick a Laguna over one for reliability reasons.

I love when people buy non Mondeo/BMW cars that your reply always starts with "Why on Earth......."

A quick search shows 12 such posts in Motors :D

Maybe he likes the Bora? Maybe he got a good spec for the money? Maybe he doesn't want a Mondeo ST etc etc etc.

If I had to buy new for that Money it would be a Mondeo ST220 or Octavia vrs.

Maybe have a look at the Pug, 407 I think it's called. Dad had one on hire and it was ok.

Personally I would get a really really really nice A6 or 5 series instead if I was after that sized car etc...

If he dont like fords then tell him to drive the Skoda octavia VRS. Even if he dosent like the badge he will when he has driven it, and found out that cust service is normally great they are ultimately relaiable.
I dont like bigger cars. I'm thinking about a fabia VRS, have been for a while. Love my focus tho!

Then he should buy a used one or a new Jetta. Seriously it makes no sense at all to buy a brand new example of a replaced model when its replacement is also available - the residual value will be even poorer than usual (let us not forget that Bora's suffer from poorer residuals than Golfs under normal circumstances, let alone after they've been replaced) and the better model is available now. It's nothing to do with it not being a Mondeo or a BMW.

Maybe he doesn't want a Mondeo ST etc etc etc.

If he knew what he wanted he wouldnt ask on an internet forum.

He needs to go test driving and he needs to test drive everything and put irrational prejudice behind him. That means go drive the Octavia vRS regardless of the badge, go drive the Mondeo regardless of the fact he once had one in 1993 that broke down, go and drive a used Audi regardless of the fact he thinks he wants a new car, etc.

Then he will truely know what he wants.

An example, if I had 30k to spend on a car I'd buy an E60 5 Series - but before I'd driven it I'd have rejected it if anyone here suggested it, due to misinformed, irrational prejudice :)

Golf's are pretty damn good at holding their value
Of course it will be worse.

The Bora isn't anything special, just a normal bland mondeo type car.

The VRS Octavia has a bit of character, fun to drive when need be but also comfortable when required too. Definately have a look at one at least!

All depends how long he wishes to keep the car, if he is going to run it into the ground then future value is of little concern tbh since every car listed will be worth next to nothing.

Getting an old bora over a new one has two main advantages, Reduced Cost New / Already know that models issues are and many should have been resolved thought the cars production cycle.

My point was that you seem to methodically work your way through cars in a particular range and come up with one that is the best VFM (BMW/Mondeo etc). Then you disregard everything else as being inferior but forget that not everyone buys a car in the same way as you, some of us are quite happy to have a car that isn't possibly the best in a range just because *we* like it. It's a strange concept but some people actually prefer Vectras over Mondeos, some people prefer MR2s to MX5s, some people prefer Porsche to Ferrari etc.

A person liking a car just because they do? Why the hell would you ever do that. Better to drive every car ever made for 10 minutes at a time and then never leave the keyboard incase someone does something stupid in your absence? non?
:p
