currently on sky with what i believe is a rebadged netgeart 834 router which we've had for the last few years.

now i have no problems at all with ignoring skys T&C's in the quest for a slightly faster connection. so thats not an issue

my questions are.

Can i change my modem/router out for a shiny new (better) one? i've already acquired my login details for my sky router so dont think thats going to be a problem.

what would people recommend as a decent bit of kit to buy?

currently have 3 desktops hardwired and 2 laptops an ipad and a ps3/apple tv connecting via wireless

will i be likely to get a bit more speed changing the unit out (in terms of connection rather than wifi as i'd expect a tin of beans with an antenna attached would give better wireless range than what i currently have.

can something be had that will allow me to tinker with SNR's and the like?

You can install DG Team firmware on the 834GT, this allows SNR tweaking. I've never had any luck with it though. I forget the procedure for flashing as I did it almost 2 years ago.

i'd rather not faff about flashing my sky modem :)

if it all goes belly up i'm internetless :(

That's true. I didn't flash mine until I'd convinced them to send me a black 934g modem. I had issues with the 834 that kept blowing power supplies and putting the router in a restate loop. Since flashing though it's been fine.

I tried the tp-link 61D modem router and it worked for a while but lately it's not connecting nicely.

You can pretty much use any modem with Sky but I believe ones of a certain type, ie chipset type are supposedly better. Is it broadcom? I forget.

Not all modems will have SNR tweaking though, the tp-link didnt, or at least I couldn't find it.

I hear these Billion modem/router names being bandied about quite a bit, here and on SkyUser. Maybe they are good?

Phone sky after the 15th august and advise ur modem is dead, hopefully they should send you out one of their shiny new wireless N routers :)
