Daft question for Tesla owners....

Hi all, I've got the Tesla Model Y RWD and am going on a cruise in a couple of weeks that will mean me leaving the car to be parked by the P&O parking people.

Now I know I've got the Tesla card that I will need to leave with the car to act as the key, but how do people here usually manage the process of leaving the car for someone else to drive? Specifically in terms of a "user" for the car and also do people here tend to put it in "valet mode"? (I believe this mode restricts a lot of features and hides personal information etc?)

I'm conscious that my profile is set for me and I don't really want someone messing with settings etc - added to which I've also got the PIN to drive enabled!

Any advice would be appreciated!
 
I'd put it in valet mode. It locks the frunk and glovebox, limits speed to 70, turns on chill mode, locks out autopilot, nav, bluetooth and wifi, and hides all your personal info.

I'm not overly keen on letting someone else drive it but the system they have is supposed to make the onboarding as simple as possible!

I might have to have a play with the valet mode I think!
 
As above. but also set it in speed limit mode to 30Mph. and you can also set it to parental controls. Probably worth leaving sentry mode on also.

What settings are you worried about? I can't see a valet wanting to change anything more than seat and mirror settings, they're only going to be driving around a car park.

I was going to but we are away for 2 weeks and it seems to munch through 3-4% per day with sentry mode on so I was going to leave it!

Nothing in particular I guess, it was more the mechanics of how best to set the car up - a friend of mine suggested setting up a "guest" driver so nothing got messed with!

Pretty sure in Valet mode, your driver profile won't be updated with changes to seating / mirrors.

Yeah sentry isn't a great idea for long periods unfortunately.
 
And turn on low power mode.
I like the idea of sentry mode but OMFG it uses so much power it's not really feasible for any period of time unless the car is also simultaneously plugged in

It cuts off at 20% and if there is a charger nearby it's fine. Between 6 and 8% a day i've found. Depends on how much you keep looking at the cameras when you are away. I'd be tempted to check where and how the car is parked at least.
 
Last time I let someone park my car at the airport, they must have been 4ft tall. Every seat, mirror and wheel adjustment possible was made :p

Tesla is covered in cameras, I'd just let it roll and see what happen. Their insurance must be top pretty robust
 
You are really overthinking this; it will not be their first rodeo with a Tesla.

This is what you do:

Turn up
Hand them the key
<If you use pin to drive, turn on valet mode or disable pin to drive>
Walk off

Messing about with things like speed limits is not helpful and don't leave anything in the car as you wouldn't do in any other car.

It's just a car and they will have far more interesting ones to drive for the few minutes they have with it.

Yeah sentry mode is horrendously power hungry. Not sure why it needs to use 4-5kwh per day. That's absolutely bonkers power draw.

(For the lols, my average home leccy use is 7kwh/day :cry: )

It’s only about 300w and that’s not exactly high for a device with that much compute.

Just think about how much your typical GPU consumes when doing stuff, it’s a lot. The only difference is it doesn’t do stuff for very long in normal use. If it was mining, you’d see similar or higher power draw.

What you are looking at is 300w x 24 hours.

It’s a lot more complex than that.

Part of the issue is the various modules it uses were never designed for such workloads and basically require most of the car to be ‘on’.

The power draw difference between keeping the car ‘awake’ and sentry mode running is fairly negligible.

In any case we are way off topic.

OP: either turn off pin to drive or turn on valet mode, hand it to the valet and get on with your holiday. It’s just a car and they’ll probably be 10’s of other Tesla owners on the same boat as you.

If you replace your mention of Tesla with 'car' in your post, this post sounds kinda ridiculous. So what is the actuall issue with the tesla that makes it not 'normal' ?
