I currently work at argos warehouse which ive been there since october i love the job to bits. The pay is good for me at the moment with no bills to pay. But the only problem i have is that im agency so i cant get out a morgage or other certain things.

Ive just heard from my gran that theres a big dairy factory being made in my area, which happens to be the biggest in the uk and its going to be all modern and that theres going to be a lot of jobs available.

Im seriously thinking about applying for a job up there, when they start advertising as the building aint finished yet :p
If the pay is better and its definetly permanent should i take it, the only thing holding me back really is what if im not happy up there and i just left a job where i am happy, cause theres nothing worse that being in a horrible work environment.

Has anyone worked in a dairy factory whats it like, and what would you think the pay is.

If it's a permanent job as opposed to agency, and that allows you to get a mortgage - then what have you got to lose.

The chances are if it's a new factory then all the staff will be new to it, you'll all be in the same boat which should make it easy to make friends. You'll probably end up having a right laugh.

Get your application in when they start advertising. :)

A lot depends on where it is, which company are building the factory (Dairy Crest, Arla, Wiseman etc.), if it's a bottling plant or just a distribution centre, whether it will specialise in liquids or cheeses & spreads & what job you would actually get:)

I once temped in the St Ivel/Unigate Dairy at Kidlington, nr Oxford.

Now from my experiance, I worked in the Milk area. I have never been so bored in all my life watching 4 pint containers fly around and splash everywhere. As an added bonus the place stinks aswell. It was also a rather cold environment to work in but that didnt bother me.

THats just my experiance, you could be working in another area like the loading area, which to me would be just like any other warehouse job except colder :) and smellier.

I would deffinatley consider applying for it though, you have the experiance, and to get in early means you could potentially pick the area you want to work in. Maybe even something a bit more senior supervisor type role.

I really think it will be a drastic change compared to argos though as it is quite noisey and the hygine rules where very strict. Also they employed nealry 75% temps. Which made it seem like no one had a clue what was going on. You cant joke about, and you could barely hear each other speak.

Theres no point not applying for it :D You dont have to accept it.

ive just been on the site to find out when its open which i was right its next autumn, so if i stay at argos till then i would have been there for 2 years, so that would look good on my cv that i was there for 2 years in a warehouse environment. I have got a good rep as i never have any sickies and im always way on time im there about 30 mins early :p

Anyway i was looking at the job titles that interest me in the dairy, oh by the way its called robert wiseman dairy, anyone heard of it. Anyway the jobs that sound interesting are:

Distribution Dairy Operative
Distribution Supervisor
Dairy / Chill Operative
Filling Hall Machine Operators
Despatch Operative
Despatch Supervisor
Stores / Goods Inwards Operative

Theres no description next to them so could someone who knows plz tell me about them.

Wiseman are doing very well for themselves nowadays, after losing the Asda contract. They're recently picked up a couple of long term better contracts to supply Tesco's and Sainsbury's so that's why they're building the distribution plant:)

Some of the jobs, such as goods in, are fairly generic however I doubt that the dairy is going to find hundreds of local people with experience in such work unless there are lots of local dairies?

I would expect a certain amount of on the job training to be provided and for the employer to be looking for enthusiasm, reliability and track record of work in potential employees.

Rather than fretting over leaving your current job why not see if you can get a job at the dairy first?

Lastly and this is not supposed to be a criticism in any way but are you really aiming your sights high enough for yourself with warehouse work and dairy work? For reference I have worked variously as a cleaner, shop worker and timber yard worker in my youth as I struggled to work out what to do with my life and it all came very good in the end. Have yu thought about night school and so on to give yourself a chance at a better paid job?

Ive narrowed it down to 3 jobs that sound a bit more different that what i was doing at argos and perhaps you could tell me about them as you have worked in a dairy factory:
Filling Hall Machine Operators
Despatch Supervisor
Distribution Supervisor

that would really put my mind at rest if you knew or anyone else knows plz tell :)

Filling Hall sounds like just filling bottles of milk, would be really boring, distribution supervisor would be pretty good as would despatch supervisor, both would require a lot of responsibility and would look good for when you apply for something better.

Tee Hee,

yes dont go near the filling machine operator job. I havent done it but that sounds terrible.

TRy the super. roles, they may be looking for people with managerial skill but this could be a break for you. Its much nicer to sit about doing the paperwork than lugging the damn milk arround.
