Just went to add some thermal pads to the back of my 3080fe and noticed this:

Any ideas guys? It's rock solid when I touch it so I doubt I broke it. Going to check if it still runs.

Edit after rma came back:

It did work when I put it all back together. Used it while waiting for the rma to be processed.

Had to push back a bit but got the rma authorisation and they picked it up and 2 weeks later I had a new 3080.

It's fully cracked. From what I've read it's a "cap" which I assume means capacitor. It's absolutely rock solid they won't budge towards each other. So I think it's always been like that and ran with it but I haven't tried it running yet.

Here's a better picture:

I have yeah, less than a month with a significant undervolt, power limit and a keen eye on temps.

That isn't melt it's grease from the stock thermal pads (which is weird because pads on caps isn't on other fe pcbs I've seen).

Yeah I'm most probably rma it but I can't tell them I've opened it up (all stock pads are still in place so I'm okay there). So need to know a reason for the rma.

Thanks for all the help.

It does work very well.

Unfortunately there's an official nvidia reply doing the rounds stating replacement of the thermal pads voids the warranty. Which is questionable but does put me in an awkward position.

Why would he be mad, probably damaged it disassembling the card?

hi nvidia, i took the card apart. I wanted to mine a bit more, and keep it cooler whilst mining.
I knew that I would invalidate the warranty, but i done it anyway and in the process i damaged it. yolo.
Can i get another one please?

nvidia: no.

damn right i say.

What's with the hate? Did mining kill a family member?

I mine when not gaming using electricity from a green supplier.

Also the fact its rock solid and not moving is an indication I didn't damage it from simply removing the backplate (which is required for watercooling if I decide to go that route). Another indication is the card runs fine after I put the backplate back on.

I like modding things I'm pretty sure that a lot of us in this community do too. Plenty of the other members have been helpful and supportive it's a shame you were not.

i would not run that even if its stable. Try get it RMAd or repaired.
There could be a fair amount of voltage running through that capacitor. Which could cause a fire and or short circuit..even though it appears stable.

Moral of the story dont open the cards,

A) unless you know what you are doing
B) expect to damage something.

I was confident in removing the backplate. The fact it's running as it was prior does indicate that the card had the fault since I got it and I didn't damage it. I will be going for an rma though so thanks for the reply.

Going to request an rma tonight and see how it goes.

Went with honesty is the best policy and told them.

Got told the default response of warranty void (which I expected and to be fair if I lied it probably would be clear I opened it up).

Going to try push back a bit ie no way to know it was broke without opening it and see if I get a "good will gesture".

Either way I'll be alright.

Seems to be an easy fix and loads of awesome members offering to help so I'm not stressed. If I still get a no after I push back I'll stick the pads on and when the restrictions lift I'll organise with a member to visit (will offer delicious coffee in return).

Opened it.

Chances are is as long as it looked pretty stock they very likely wouldnt notice as it doesnt look physically damaged and it tests fine. They are pretty well enclosed so the majority of the pcb etc is unseen.

You'd be very unlucky to get someone who is going to get a magnifying glass on the screw heads and start stripping the card. They just don't have time for that.

I've returned opened + watercooled nvidia cards before. No issues.

The repair while easy is something IMO that a few month old card should not need.

Did you return via nvidia Web chat or the reseller?

I hope that didn't break due to heat. With the back of the card running close to 100C due to the memory temps there is a possibility of some components cracking or getting damaged under stress. Brings into question the longevity of these cards.
Never considered that as a thing. From a cursory google it seems that this type isn't prone to cracking from high temps (it's the smaller MLCCs that do). Not saying it's not possible but just not highly reported.

@0h_no_not_again have you anything to say on this? You seemed to know your caps quite a lot from your reply.

It arrived in their Hong Kong centre two days ago. Should have an update mid next week.

@Dannysaiyan I had identical mining temps when I put the plate back on so I don't think they were useless (some may argue that because they're so bad they are useless in the first place).

Arrived today after a day delay.

Was hopeful it would arrive yesterday as it departed the Newcastle depot (around an hour away) but it was the Newcastle Under Lyme depot...

Obviously put the new thermal pads on and the temps are 20 degrees lower with the same settings as before.

Edit: after settling its more like 20/25 degree improvement on previous settings.
