Hi all,

A mate of mine approached me for help as he'd accidentally deleted a clip from his camcorder. He didn't know it at the time, so carried on recording during the day.

I have recovered a 783MB .avi file from the camcorder's SD card, but I think it's been overwritten by subsequent recordings on the day.

The file I've recovered wont open with windows media player or VLC media player. But I have 783MBs of something. Is there any way to salvage bits of the footage?

I think I know the answer, but no harm in asking.

Cheers in advance,

FB..

AVI files usually are made up of chunks of data that are seperate from each other so you can probably recover something possibly depending on how much has been over-written but I suspect the header is missing that has information for decoding the chunks so normal media players won't be able to do much with it - not sure if virtual dub would do any better - there are tools that can work with incomplete AVIs but I'm a bit out of the loop in regard to reccomending one.

Thanks for replying folks.

I'll have a look at virtual dub.

Format? Not sure. All I know is it's an avi file from an 8 gig SD card formatted in FAT32. If you can give me some pointers to find further information, I can go and check.

Thanks again.
