Damn, HG gone i think ?

do not drive the car with a failed headgasket!!!

your oil is contaminated with water, water is NOT a lubricant, expect things like bearings, rings and cams to wear out fast. expect a warped head from it overheating, as said by someone earlier the temp guage may not read correctly. catch the bus!

if you bought the car recently, take it back to the dealer and try to get your money back. another important thing, next time you buy a car, check for signs of HGF.
and £300 for fixing it? their having a laugh. £80-100 in labour is more like it. maybe fix it yourself ?

I had quotes from around 4 garages. They all suggested 6-7 hours work. I think Rover have it in their book as a 6 hour job. £80-100 labour.. sounds very cheap!

Personally i would take it back and get my money back. Like you say you've had the car 5 days so its likely that the dealer knew about it when he sold it and hence why it was cheap.

Who knows what else is wrong with it ...

How much did you pay for it btw?

Unless he bought a warrenty with the car, there will be little chance of getting his money back. Sold as seen and all that...

If he's a dealer, regardless of any "warranty" you should still have statutory rights AFAIK. So if something has gone faulty in an unreasonable amount of time, then you should be able to either have him arrange for it to be fixed, or reject the car.

Unfortunately though, we don't live in a perfect world and if he doesn't help you out and agree to this, then very little will be done unless you're prepared to take him to court - and even then you still might lose.

Basically poor maintenance and thrashing the car from cold leads to the liners dropping and causing HGF.

Then when it gets repaired, the noobs don't skim the liners, leading to further HGF and more business for them.

Are Rover's prone to head gasket failure then?

No :D

See, that's where people go wrong. Not all Rover's have HGF. The K-Series has HGF.

R220, sorry to hear about the problems with the car. The 1.6K is much more problematic than the 1.4, but even so, the car should last 100k between HG chances.

I know 1.4's that are on 150,000 miles on the original gasket. Garages seem to charge whatever the hell they want, even though the job itself could be done in under 5 hours by an experience mechanic. Typical labour charges should be around £200 inc parts, but lots and lots of places charge over the odds... just because people will pay it.

Well i paid £650 [haggled from £995] for the car.

I thought it was a good deal as -

79k miles with fair bit of history
Perfect body, seriously.. its amazing no rust/marks at all, very well looked after.

PAS, Leccys, etc. etc..

MOT till November
4 New Tyres

Not bad ?

Thats not a terrible price but not a good one either. The dealer will have most likely picked that car up for less then half what you paid. That just the nature of the business, I never will buy a car from a dealer personally.

If your getting the repair then do it properly even if you only intend to have the car for 1 year it'd be good if this HGF didnt reoccur and it will if you just put the same parts that failed, back into play.
I wouldnt sue because its just too much trouble for too little money.

I've had a head skimmed before for 125 and then again for 50, thats the lowest price for that. The guys were working out in their garden on my car so thats as cheap as it gets imo :D That time it was Montego, it had down 110k miles though and it got no sympathy from me.

Third time it went I kept driving it to the bus stop because it was bloody cold and CBA and it was destroyed - I could hear the water boiling in the block with the temp guage on stone cold
So they replaced the entire engine for 115, bargain :) (took them 3 months though).

The taxi drivers will know who can repair the cars cheapest, they run Rovers often and they'll do hundreds of thousands of miles in them. Whoever keeps them on the road are the real experts

Just phoned another garage who apparently are quite cheap and they said £400 all in, including a head skim etc.. pah! far too much.

He also said some along the lines of 'Rovers keep me in business' :D
