So here we are, Christmas Day.

By midday, all presents are unwrapped and I'm sat next to my new Core i7 processor, EX58-UD5 motherboard, Corsair XMS3 6GB DDR3 memory and Corsair H50-1 cooler. Lunch will be up soon though, so to one side everything goes.

Finally, with lunch digesting and all the clearing up done, it's time to start dismantling everything. Within the time taken to remove the side panels of the case, I realize my plan has come to a grinding halt...

The OCZ 500W PSU I intending taking from my current Core2Duo build doesn't have an 8-pin ATX12V connector... only a 4-pin one... and I don't have any other PSU in the house that does either. ****. :(.

So now I face a double problem. 1, I now need to spend £70-ish that I had hoped not to, and don't really have, and 2, it'll be Wednesday if I'm lucky before the new PSU will be delivered.

Now to turn this into a semi-useful thread rather than a sob story, has anyone any suggestions beyond the Corsair range of PSUs? Specifically I think I'm going for the TX 650W at the moment. Full specs are below if it makes much of a difference.

Don't know about x58 mobos but i am sure you can still use your psu, you can on skt 775 mobos anyway.

I would wait untill someone with more experience to confirm this though, don't want to be responsible for damaging your new toys. :D
 
Well, funny you should say that. Obviously upon realizing my mistake, I jumped straight to Google to try and find out if I had any options and a couple of links suggested it was possible to get it up and running, but as you've said, the last thing I want to do is break anything new!

For any kind soul who is more knowledgable than I, this is the PSU I currently have:

I had actually found those adapters earlier, however I will be honest and say I have absolutely no idea of the power supply is up to it and my bigger worry is, given the higher end nature of the components, do I want to be using a 'bodged' solution rather than a newer PSU with the correct connector?

You know, I think it's the probability of having to wait for a new supply to be delivered that's agitating me the most. Why on earth can't the two well known electronics and components shops stock decent brand name items, rather than cheaper and infinitely more rubbish stuff yet charge the same price?!

I just want to play with my new stuff :(;).

True it's not an ideal situation, personally id suck it up and flog the ocz and get the nice corsair, 500w isn't much nowadays anyway so least you'll be set once bought.
 
I think that's pretty much what I'll do to be honest. Frustrating though!

How I wish I'd checked the PSU when I ordered all the new bits :(.

Ah yes hindsight is such a wonderful thing, doesn't work like that when you're buying new bits though eh. ;)
 
Hey, I just had a read through of the manual and on page 28 it appears that you can still use your 4 pin power connector in the pins not covered by the sticker. This wont be ideal if you plan on overclocking that shiny new i7 but should get your build up and running.
 
Now you know I did read that page actually, and got confused lol. What I don't fully understand is, if their are 8 pins, how is it I can get away with only using 4? Can I be absolutely sure everything will run right? As you picked up on, the manual states some kind of cover needs to be removed when using all 8, however there is no cover of any kind on the pins at the moment!

I think the intention is to get a new PSU anyway, but if I can be sure the build will run with the one I have right now, I will go ahead and get it setup :).

Ok so the more I read about this, the more confident I seem to be getting that I can get away with the 2x2 12V connector provided it will supply at least the 130W required by the CPU... right so far? lol

If that's all it boils down to, and accepting I won't be able to overclock until I get a new PSU, is there any way I can be sure my current OCZ 500W will do the required 130W on that connector?
 
hey memphis, I built a machine just last week with the same issue it was a 775 build using the same board as in my sig, bought from the members market. the plug will only fit in one side so plug it in and away you go. The instructions in the dfi manual are just as obscure but boil down to the same thing, even with the 4pin in the dfi we managed to overclock the cpu a little but i imagine that comes down to the chip if you need to up the voltage a lot then this will limit what you can do.

edited heavily, basically had written loads of crap that just isn't needed.

The 8 pin atx connector is backwards compatible with 4 pin psus. It's four 12V, four 0V lines instead of two and two. Good odds that you won't notice any difference whatsoever leaving two of them empty (the 4 pin will only fit in one part of it ), the idea is more wires means lower voltage drop, especially at high current draws.

Your psu is rated for 18A on each of two 12V rails. Your 3870 and any number of hard drives won't come close to the 200W this allows. The first rail will deal primarily with the cpu and is good for 200W. So the stock speed 130W won't bother it one bit. Your psu is definitely man enough for the job.

I would imagine it'll be entirely capable of overclocking the processor as well. However I've seen reports of overclocked i7s drawing well over 130W (though probably under 200). If the system behaves oddly (turns off under load perhaps) or the cables running to the 4 pin plug run noticably hot to the touch you probably want a new psu.

np and btw im running 2 38 series cards and an overclocked q6600 on a 460 cooler master so ure ocz will, as jon said be more than man enough.
