Damn Small Linux writable virtual drive

I've got DamnSmallLinux installed on my portable external and it's working fairly well.

However, whenever you shut the virtual machine down all your settings/programs etc. get wiped.

Are there any guides around that will help me make a larger virtual hard drive that can be written to as I use the machine?
