Hi guys after attemping to overclock:

Then ending up like this:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17935613&highlight=username_psd99

My new rig keeps on crashing. It is random. I come back to the pc after hours of it idle and all I see is a black screen. There is no bsod now.

Then I have to restart it by pressing the switch on the vista screen it tells me windows did not close down properly. Looks like a black OS crash.

I went into the BIOS and changed everything that I entered to overclock the thing. Atm the only things set are the memory timings such as 8,8,8, 20, the fsb at 266 and the voltage going into the ram at 1.7v.

I had to change the voltage and timings before because Vista would crash my machine and just halt. It worked fine for ages and then stupid me decided to overclock and now I got this annoying problem.

What could be causing this black screen?

How do you do that on vista?

I dropped the FSB down to 200 and in the last 9 hours it hasn't crashed I am well well below the overclock. Thing Q6600 is running at 1.8 ghz a total disgrace to all overclocking kind!

what do you mean by stock speed?

the Q6600 is stock speed of 2.4ghz and yesterday it crashed twice at this

do you know much about memory voltages for ddr3? Is 1.7v too much if the memory is rated at 1.6v?

On a FSB of 166 it was fine but when I upped it to 200 it has been crashing.

I've just put it on 200 but changed the DDR3 RAM voltage to 1.63 instead of 1.7v

Well I set the BIOS to optimised defaults then I changed only the first 4 memory timings, set voltage to 1.7v dram, set FSB to 266 and so far so good hasn't crashed.

It was probably something I set in the BIOS that made it crash. I'll up the FSB to 333 and multiplier to 9.0. Then I will see how the computer does. I don't think putting the memory on as 1333mhz right away will be a good idea.
