Damn, was about to get an RX100 but might hold off...

That'll be a crazy piece of kit if its real. The photos of it look like concept shots though that where originated from a drawing or 3D program. The price tag will be eye watering over here in the UK though if its $3000!

I know, at $3K it will likely be far too expensive, but I can't help lusting after such a camera. The only thing that would make me happier with such a compact, would be if the lens was a 35mm 1.4, but F2 is good enough for me, and the Zeiss optics would likely be great.

*If* sony bring this to market, they could have a real winner imo, I would never buy a Sony DSLR as things currently stand, but I would definitely want to buy this, *funds permitting*.

If that comes to fruition it will probably be an awesome camera. A f/2.0 35mm Carl Zeiss T* lens! Very nice.

$3000? - sort of Leica X2 territory (providing they use the normal exchange rates rather than the usual ripoff $=£ rate!)

Amazing camera, but I think it it just too expensive though.

What I want from a small camera is actually low price tag so if I fall in the water crossing a river I wont have lost 3K, and I can pocket it walking around Marakesh etc. at night without having so much fear.

That's what insurance is for.

However the price is a little too much imo, but it will likely be an awesome camera + lens that will also likely have the Sony equivalent of VR.
If price come down I'll happily trade in an RX100 and pay the extra for an RX1. Tbh I think the RX1 will be in a niche market of it's own (at least until others catch up).

Does the RX100 use the same sensor as the nikon 1 system? If so, which nikon lens would a RX1 use?

Not completely sure what you mean, but it would be like using a full frame Nikon (probably D800 in terms of resolution) with a 35mm F2 VR lens.

As the RX100 is 20mp, I would think the FF RX1 would be more than that.

Ah sorry I should have clarified a bit. Trying to multitask and failing miserably :S lol

I meant as nikon and sony have a partnership for sensor development and fabrication. I read somewhere that the RX100 is based on the nikon 1 series sensor, so I presumed that the FF model is also a nikon/sony sensor design, but who knows!

It is unknown if the RX100 is the same design as the Nkon 1 sensor, although newer. It is a similar size but I don't know if the size is exactly the same (a strong indicator is when 2 sensors have identical dimensions to the nearest 0.1mm). The Nikon 1 sensor is Nikon designed and Sony fabricated, but the RX100 is probably a Sony designed exmor. Perhaps the next Nikon 1 camera will have a sensor like the RX100.

This RX 1 is rumored to have 24MP Sony sensor that will appear in the A99 (makes sense). So this doesn't match any current Nikon FF sensor. The D600 is likely to have a 24MP sensor, but it has been suggested that this is a Nikon designed sensor fabbed by Aptina. However, I think there is a good chance the new Sony A99 and the Nikon D600 will have the same sensor (and by past experience the Nikon sensor might be tweaked quite a lot). This would funnily enough make the A99 much more expensive than the Nikon D600.

I am not sure it really matters, clearly both Sony and Nikon can individually make amazing sensors (Nikon has exclusive and class leading sensors in the D3/D3s/D4, the D3100 sensor was ahead of Canon and the Nikon 1 sensor was a generation ahead of Olympus/Panny m43 sensors, but smaller), they often collaborate, and they share fabrication facilities.

I have so much want for this, unfortunately I don't have much need for it and could never justify the outlay.

However for anyone that can live with the cost it will be an amazing bit kit and one I'll certainly be envious of.

Amazing piece of innovation if this is announced as real tomorrow. A full frame sensor in a body the size of a Panasonic GX1. Just wish it had interchangeable lenses.

Love the innovation, but f2 :(

Also it looks like its crying out to be a sleek full frame inter-changeable lens system.

I hope they bring it out just for the hell of it, and to say 'see told you so' :D

Got me thinking that the Nikon FM3a really needs a new digitial + AF version:
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/fm3a.htm

No reason why the same camera cannot be produced now (the Fm3a was produced form 2001 to 2006) , made a little lighter and filled with most of the modern Nikon techno-goodies.

Interchangeable lenses, 55 years of Nikon F lenses to use.
Please Nikon, please.

Why would you want the FM3 with AF if you want to use all those MF lenses?

I'm not sure a company would do that, are these MF lenses even made anymore? They won't make much money from lens sales if everyone just buy the body and go on eBay to get their lenses.

The catch 22 with these compact FF camera is that you want all the modern goodies with the small size.

You either create a whole new lens line up or use an existing line, like Canon, but that's also insane as that defeats the purpose of a compact FF in the first place.

Personally, small FF, a few 24mm to 100mm primes in between, all wide apertures and be done with it.

You do realise that F/2 on a full frame camera and on a 35mm lens is more than enough...In my opinion anyway. Even if it was F/1.4 i'd be shooting F/2.

I'm a bit of a Sony DSLR/SLT lover at heart. I love the technology they push in their cameras. This could be awesome, i'd lust over it almost indefinitely. It'll most likely use the same A99 sensor that is rumoured at 24mp which is going to have awesome low light abilities.

You can use all the old MF lenses and all the AF lenses, and the new MF lenses (Nikon still manufacturer MF 50mm primes for examples, let alone PC lenses).
remember, almost all Nikon lenses are fully forwards and backwards compatible, even between DX and FX. An updtaed FM3a with AF will allow the newest AF-S primes and zoom as well as all the older classics (50mm Noktor etc.), just like every modern Nikon DSLR.
