Danny Baker sacked

Yes, because it's so obviously racist to treat people equally regardless of their "race". We must all strive to judge people not by the content of their character but by the colour of their skin - that's equality there.

You seem to be confusing treating people equally with treating people the same.

Comparing black people to monkeys is highly offensive due to history so you don't do it, full stop.

I also had Asian friends who would use the term "coconut" as an insult to other Asians, they explained it as a slur that meant brown on the outside but white inside. Again that is highly offensive to a certain demographic, but not so much to me as a white person.

If there were a term that was used derogatorily towards me being white I would not want people to use that.

So we treat people differently in that we don't use certain terms as it is offensive to them specifically, but we treat all people equally by not using offensive descriptions.

There can't be equality on comparing races to monkeys, because that ship sailed after 100+ years of using monkeys as a racial epithet (and it is still used as such, make no mistake)

If the negative link falls out of living memory then, sure, we can achieve equality on calling all races monkeys without insult or recrimination. But until then, society has lost the privilege.

Ps. Quoting MLK to support calling black people monkeys as some demented form of equality is pretty next level.

It's only offensive because people have been trained to find it offensive through media reporting about how it's offensive, if people chose to just ignore it then it would cease to be used as an attack by people inclined to use it because it wouldn't get the reaction they wanted.

I'm not defending Danny Baker but he didn't strictly equate black people with chimps and argues it was posted in an innocent (albeit ignorant) way, the issue here really is the way the people have chosen to interprete it. It's not even like there is a black person in the photo they are two white people. Also, if his Tweet was so offensive then why was it okay for the media to plaster it everywhere whilst sticking the boot in? he deleted it almost immediately so that very few black people got to see it but the media still have it posted in their articles. Like I said if any white supremacists want to offend black people then get a job in the media and just pretend to be disgusted/offended whilst disseminating obviously offensive material.

You don't think being singled out and called a monkey by racist pricks is where the offense is learned? It's the media telling otherwise unbothered victims that they should be offended?

Also, what sort of nonsense is 'ignore it and they'll stop'? When did that ever work?

I completely agree with you.

It is a sad state of affairs but it is also the reality of the world we live in and we either play ball with this reality or you don't.

I think you "play ball" by apologising when you get things wrong and then attempting to make amends. This wasn't a case of someone being racist and apologising for being caught as we so often see this was someone apologising for not thinking through his actions, which were never meant to be racist at all.

Its a dangerous road to go down where the assumption seems to be that if it can be perceived as racist we must act as though that was the intention and punish accordingly. Danny Bakers courts controversy and has made a career out of it to the like and displeasure of many but I don't genuinely believe that he is a) racist and b) even if he was, would announce it in quite such a dramatic manner!

Meh, too late now. Gotta keep going along with this train wreck.

Sad thing is, the morally outraged forgot all about Danny Baker on Monday morning, moved quickly on to The Jeremy Kyle Show scandal, this show has now been scrapped (although to be fair - good decision!) and tomorrow it will be something else in the firing line.

Normally when people say 'the sad thing is' they don't then go on to agree with what the next part is.

In this case its perfectly logical.

Im pleased that the Jeremy Kyle Show has been axed as it was a pretty vile concept for a TV programme but ITV haven't suddenly become all moral about the premise of the show, they have simply reacted to it hitting the headlines. Outcome is good, method of getting there probably questionable.

As if that would be such an obvious thing to happen, whoever could have guessed it. :D

Guys, you got your pound of flesh and apology from him. Time to get back on Twitter and move on to your next victim.

You seem to be confusing treating people equally with treating people the same.

And you seem to be confusing judging people solely on what you consider to be their "race" and treating people differently solely because of what you consider to be their "race" as equality. In fact, it's the very essence of racism.

Comparing black people to monkeys is highly offensive due to history so you don't do it, full stop.

1) It's no more offensive than comparing any other person to a monkey.
2) Danny Baker didn't do that anyway.
3) Chimpanzees aren't monkeys. But that's a minor point in comparison to the first two.

I also had Asian friends who would use the term "coconut" as an insult to other Asians, they explained it as a slur that meant brown on the outside but white inside. Again that is highly offensive to a certain demographic, but not so much to me as a white person.

You consider people to be defined by what you consider their "race". I consider that offensive. You treat people differently because of what you consider to be their "race". I consider that offensive. So by your own argument you're being irrationally prejudiced against me. Of course you're not offended by racism - you support racism. That has nothing to do with you being "white". It's entirely to do with you being you. You're very fashionably irrationally prejudiced.

So Danny Baker knows that Harry and his woman have had a baby so finds a picture of a well to do couple with a Chimp.
Of course you didn't know what you were doing Danny and what's worse is that some in this thread agree with you.
He didn't deserve to lose his job but hey ho.
