WoW in itself wasn't necessarily the problem, as much as everybody else thinking they had to be just like WoW to succeed. And so we ended up with countless WoW-clones and even EQ adding WoW-style elements to a game that didn't need/want them.
I didn't hate WoW for what it was. I hated WoW for the fact that overnight the market became afraid to try anything except what WoW was doing. And for me that killed MMOs completely. Every new MMO wanted a slice of WoW's player base, and copied WoW in many aspects. Ironically, most of them failed because WoW was already the best of the WoW clones
