Dark Age Of Camelot Eden

WoW in itself wasn't necessarily the problem, as much as everybody else thinking they had to be just like WoW to succeed. And so we ended up with countless WoW-clones and even EQ adding WoW-style elements to a game that didn't need/want them.

I didn't hate WoW for what it was. I hated WoW for the fact that overnight the market became afraid to try anything except what WoW was doing. And for me that killed MMOs completely. Every new MMO wanted a slice of WoW's player base, and copied WoW in many aspects. Ironically, most of them failed because WoW was already the best of the WoW clones :D

I dont think anything will bring back those golden days of MMOs, not necessarily because of the games themselves but because of the playerbase. People in the 1997-2004 MMOs were generally more sociable, more willing to team up and chat, more willing to work out challenges and things for themselves. Possibly because many back then came to MMO gaming from a background of having played social boardgame RPGs and pen and paper RPGs. The playerbase today is more interested in how much they can do without having to interact with people and when something has to be worked out, will just run straight to a website/youtube rather than work it out themselves.

I've always said that WoW making MMOs gather mainstream appeal was simultaneously the best thing to happen to the genre and the worst thing to happen to the genre.

That is what my comment was alluding too. The second people become stuck now they can just go ask on Reddit or google and find the answer. Though you don't have to do that of course, it can mean you get left behind in the endless rush to reach 'end game'. Blimey, I've just see UO is still going and being updated. That must be bloody hard to get in to.

There are only 2 occasions in my MMO history spanning over 25 years that I can say, left me awe struck.

1. Entering Malmohus for the first time in DAoC and seeing an actual huge dragon flying over us, only to encounter that same dragon days later with a 300 strong raiding party and get totally annihilated.

2. Entering Stormwind City for the first time and that orchestral score blaring out as you look up at the huge statues.

Best MMO ever for me. I tried that other server that went online last year and it was a disaster. In the little bit of time I did get to play it I realised I just don't have the time for it and it's pretty impossible to solo.

Yeah the other freeshard Atlas had a lot of problems, this is a different team and has been great.

Its easy to solo here as there are repeatable quests in the battlegrounds and dungeon quests and you gert a level if you finish the dungeon.
They also added quests in different zones to.

I usually turn xp off at a certain level to play in the battlegrounds and just dip my toe in now and again.

Might give that a go then. Loved playing a scout in BG.

Man those were the days I was Mid pryd shadowblade. Darkness falls was my camping ground along with emain from time to time until rambo and his minstrel goons spoilt it.
Wow, Rambo that's a blast from the past, I remember they used to run in a gank squad zerging round Emain (with Servants of the Lake the 133t guild in Alb/Prydwen), got peeved a few times as you'd sometimes have a fair fight going on then they'd just pitch up and kill the area stone dead. But still happy days. IIRC he was a Greek guy, had a few chats with him as my infs name was Greek (Eidolon).

I remember him too. Used to roam about as a friar back then. He was annoying and was always in rvr.
