Posting here because i'll only trust the Overclockers community rather than any old stuff on Google.

So, i'm looking to buy a dark visor to go with my current helmet and just read on an Ebay listing "you all know the score with black visors - off road use only!". It may sound obvious but is it against the law to ride with a dark/black visor? Even during the day?

If the laws, the law then is there any other dark visor i can purchase that is legal?

Any suggestions on colors of visors would be fantastic!

There are none that are legal im afraid, there are some that have a slight smoke tint to them that don't have "off road use only" but they are pointless imo.
I have ridden for over 5 years with either a completely black/blue or iridium visor and had no problem from police, BUT its one of those things you know they will pick you on if they ever stop you for doing something stupid...
I always ride with a spare visor around my waist if I am going to be out when it gets dark or rain though, and most visor shops online give away free visor bags when you purchase the visor.

Another option if your worried about police attention is using pinlocks, clear visor with a black pinlock insert, much easier to remove if you get told off.

Which is why ACPO said that the law should be enforced with common sence. At night time, even if the visor is up you'll get done but on a sunny day the chances are that you won't even get tugged.

If I recall correctly, they felt shades where more of a risk than visors.

The safest way to play it is to carry a clear visor with you, under the seat if it fots, in the backbox if you have one or in a belt pouch designed for it.
I know of several people pulled over for various things and no police officer was fussed about the visor. I've read of people who have had grief for it, but when carrying a spare clear visor they have been fine.

The law is ridiculous in as much as it exends to pillion passengers too. My wife (blind but very light sensitive) cannot legally have a dark visor. The law prefers that you wear shades which in an accident can get pushed into your eyes.
I prefer the dark visor option!

I have a dark smoked visor with dark pinlock. With the helmet being dark inside it looks black from the outside for all intents and purposes. Basically has the same effect on vision as wearing shades would. I was told that this was as dark as I could go legally. But as mentioned, you would most likely get pulled if you were wearing it at night. So like Fireskull, if I'm going to be out after dark I take a clear visor around my waste in case I need to swap :)

When I did BikeSafe my IAM observer had an iridium visor - twas an odd combo with a BMW GS...

Been riding with a dark visor since I passed 6 months ago and not had any problem. Always make sure I'm home before dark or carry a clear one if there's a chance I won't be.

had my blacked out visor on last thursday, Hmm the dark nights are getting closer, Initialy I was like ohh I cant see much. got easier as I went on though, Even took bike up to 160 on a private road. LOL
