Darkfall Preview (MMORPG)

Why is everyone concerned about graphics? If it plays well it will sell, if its a pile of poo, it wont and will fail missribly. Graphics will be fine for what it is.

10k people.. and aimed pvp. Honestly, that is going to suck. There is no way they will ever be able to prevent lag. Even the smallest amounts of lag will utterly ruin aimed pvp. positional pvp is totally ruined with the smallest amounts of lag, so aimed will be just laughable.

The rest of Darkfall is really, really appealing. I've wanted an MMO that improves skill just by practice rather than XP. I will give this a try, but I am certain the pvp will be lacking if there is anything neat that number of people online.

Aimed pvp with lag is fine, just means you hit the guy trying to hide behind him instead of the person you where aiming at :P

With 10k people your bound to hit someone ;)

Have you seen the size of the world map? Those 10k people will never be in such close proximity that it will lag the server. Oh and it's seamless no instances other than entering the very little dungeons they have (end pve is kill one of the 6 demigods) and Inns I think.

You say pvp will be lacking? As in the lag will hurt it? Or the actual numbers will be low? It's pvp anywhere, no dedicated servers it's either pvp or play a different game. :p

The lag will hurt it. I don't mean lacking as in none of it, but lacking as in a lack-lustre experience of "oo, people, oh, lag, oh dead."

It doesn't take many people to cause lag in an MMO.. there's so much going on all the time. We could compare this to EVE pvp.. that is intensely filled with lag and ruined it for a lot of people.

I'm willing to wait and see how it works out. It isnt the first MMO to have aimed targetting in PvP, before I declare it a fail I will give it the opportunity to surprise me by succeeding

Not anymore, but they've had to spend hundreds of thousands on specialised hardware to get rid of it.

I'm more worried about the general size of the outfit and its ability to actually host the game to an acceptable standard.

They might not even use 10k as a cap though but that's what they were aiming for. It's not set in stone unfortunately. EVE has 35k and even more when I go on sometimes but each system is instanced is it not?

I think they'll have an open-beta so we can test it then, don't know if they will. 22nd of January... I think it will be awesome. :)

Lag includes waiting for your modules to activate.. I've had several people who play all across the EVE galaxy tell me you still wait ages for modules to activate.

Hopefully so, would be nice to see players opening public shops like in UO, where you could go in and use their equipment to craft :)

As far as I'm aware there is player owned cities but they're designated in a spot and can't build anywhere you feel but they'll be a lot to build I imagine.

I was playing UO... didn't have a clue what to do and only 300 online this 'free' server. :p

meh another mmo that will be a new dawn in mmo gaming. Just like Age of Conan, Vanguard, Tabula Rasa, PoTBS, Hellgate, Dungeons and Dragons......

See a pattern?

I dont really care if its a "new dawn in mmo gaming" or not, I will be perfectly happy if its just good and recaptures something of UO. I guess you could say that I want it to be the exact opposite to a "new dawn", more like I want it to be a "past sunrise of mmo gaming" :)
