Darkfall Preview (MMORPG)

Awesome!

I used to play UO a lot (and I mean a lot back in 98-2001). Even acted as a UO Counselor on the East Shards for a while until we were shut down by the OSI lawsuit.

This looks a great game and I hope it can provide the same level of depth as UO.

Aww I miss my Halberd of Vanquishing :)

I've been looking forward to this game for years ... but after such a long wait and getting so hyped for warhammer and being let down I just really can't be arsed.

I'll stick with me new xbox and maybe the new total war game.

Will have to give this a try i think. Haven't paid any attention to it as it's been in development probably since before i was born it seems, but now they have got their act together and have a release date, i will definately jump in.

Sandbox MMO, that's what i like, something like SWG offered, where there is so much depth that you feel there's always something to discover or that you don't know, just like real-life.

Not a fan of the graphics, especially the character models and UI for three reasons:

1. It's meant to be realistic, not an artistic style, so aging graphics don't help. (They look, unsurprisingly, 5-6 years old, which is roughly the dev time)
2. They've gone for an ugly UI, some medievil stylings. Like many people, i like clean and effective UI's with no added crap around it, or dodgy fonts. But hopefully, the game allows modding to solve that.
3. MMO's are designed to be running for several years and so, if the graphics look very dated now before release, they will look awful in a few years time. WWII Online also suffers this problem and players of that will tell you that it puts new players off considerably.

However, graphically it does look almost on par with SWG, so i am satisfied that it would immerse me enough. I think i'll look deeper into the game now, i'm hoping there's player housing a la SWG too.

The graphics and UI do look quite dated, but as some other MMOs have shown , like EvE and WW2 Online, engines can be easily updated. The important thing is to get the game running, with a stable user base and then the engine can be updated later on.

No idea why some people think it seems like a generic MMO, almost nothing about it seems generic. I can only guess that those people looked at 3 screenshots, read nothing about the game at all and then felt like they were qualified to comment.

I'm hoping for something akin to the best MMO times I ever had in UO, maybe it will achieve that, maybe not. Can but hope :)

If this captures just 50% of the magic that UO had then I will be more than happy. Everything so far looks really good but recent MMORPGs have failed to live up to expectations so best not to get over excited.

Agree 100%

Would add that the screenshots people have seen are real untouched and on Medium setting..they look more than functional to me and if you're into graphics you can bump things up to look like they are here:

The graphics to me though are only a minor part of a game imo. For me they are bottom of the list after game mechanics, artistic style etc. What devs do with the graphics is more important than how up to date they are.

I could fire up Fallout 1 or 2 now and I wouldn't wish i'd loaded Fallout 3 instead just because of the graphics :D . The gameplay is just better eventhough its over 11 years old and I actually feel more immersed despite the graphics. Not saying you can't like Fallout 3 and DF, just making a point about people talking about the graphics like they are 99% of a game

Anyway the gameplay is the draw for me rather than the graphics (and they have to be on par with or better than 99% of MMO's out atm anyway). I just hope i'm not getting hyped over something that won't deliver on the promises..

This is sort of off topic and apologies to ask but does anyone still play UO on a free server at all or something? I never had the chance to play it. I know it's sprite graphics but sprite graphics never gets old. :p

Didn't want to open a new thread about it.

A bit OT, but does anyone fancy setting up an OcUK guild for this? Not something I would normally do but if this does live up to they hype and turns out to be awesome I could think of nothing better than teaming up with some of you guys and having a blast.... Anyone interested?

It will be discussed about nearer the launch, I think I'm going to be playing this a lot. So it may peek my interest. :p

This looks really interesting, the only thing that bothers me a bit are the graphics, and I know gfx should not be taken into account but I can't force me to play a game that is ugly as hell. I'll probably try it anyway

a lot of social/casual players will hate this and start shouting "MAKE THEM STOP IT!" You lose all your equipment when you die, no holds barred pvp, relentless terrain, many many skills, attacking relies on where you're aiming at...

Sounds great but I wonder how to the implement this FPS attacking style.

Take WOW or WAR for example you have buffs, debuffs, heals, taunts, detaunts, thrown objects, swords etc.

Now your typical FPS has 2-3 sometimes only 4 weapon items MAX.

How will it be possible to aim, move and hit F1-F12 + 1-10 unless someone can give me an extra set of fingers I'll struggle to play this game.

As far as I'm aware you can use melee in third-person and first person but archery is first-person at all times. Regarding buffs might have to pre-buff yourself rather than using it when you go into the heat of battle. I'm just guessing though, we will all see 22nd january.

I don't think i would get away with playing another MMO that's hardcore, considering my gf already switches my PC off at the mains when mad! lol

Doesn't look that bad at all.

And that was october, it will be surely hitting the polishing stages now. I really like the lighting in the game. Some of the first-person textures need to be improved though. I'm going to hunt for a screeny with the GFX at full.:)
