DarkStar One

Freespace 2 is probably the best Space shooter... I-war 2 edge of chaos and Freelancer (and starlancer, which is a bit more retro) are honourable mentions.

The main complaint of Darkstar One is that it is too repetitive... Freespace 2 has a nice variety of different missions, from bombing massive capital ships, to escorts, to whizzing around in ultra manoeuvrable interceptors :p

I completed it, it's an OK game, if you like space shooters then worth checking out. Dogfighting is flawed in that often you end up literally just circling each other, I've still yet to find a better game for pure combat that Freespace 2.

There is one very cool bit where you team up with all your buddies you've met along the way to attack a mothership, that was 'epic' as the saying goes.

You're right, that's the feeling I've got from the combat. Trading is slim at best and the levelling up system just seemed bolted on for "extra" content. It was fun but I don't think I'll get all the way through it now. (Purchased it with galciv2 and sins for £13 or something)
