Just been reading through the Band of Brothers thread, and whilst my mind was on all things WW2 related, was thinking about Das Boot. I bought the full 5 hour mini-series (not the cut down film version) on DVD last year, and it's amazing viewing. Excellently shot, the way the mood of the crew changes from total utter boredom, to the thrill of the hunt, then to the absolute terror of being depth charged and sunk... Not many things I've watched have ever gripped me as much as when U-96 tries to run the Gibraltar Straights...

Anybody seen it?

I watched it when it first aired on TV, it was one of the few things that you looked forward to seeing how it was unfolding the next week.

Das Boot is a brilliant film. The series is better as it gives more time to develop the characters.

I didn't realise but Peterson (ics) kept the actor caged up inside for the project so that they'd loose the suntan colour.

"ALARM!!!" :D

Das Boot is epic stuff. But as somebody else said, it has to be German language, English subtitles. Then again I think you could just listen to the German soundtrack and let the atmosphere do the talking, it's that good.

But never ever watch the movie version they show on TV occasionally.

I've got the Director's Cut version of it and love it (especially the commentary), but didn't realise they had released the mini-series as a whole. I might have to go and order it as I haven't seen that version since they showed it on BBC2 in... 1989/1990?

Yeah I remember watching this on BBC 2 in 1988 or something. Even though I was 9 or something I knew I was watching something very special. The claustrophobia a it creates is amazing.

I'm going to pick it up as soon as come to think of it!

edit - oh yeah don't buy the film version, its garbage, subtitled too :o

At the time, you couldn't buy the mini series, only the film (going back to region 1 era where there was a only 100 selection of titles) R2 was years off.

Hehe it is cool, Germans consider it as almost folk music apparently. I still have the 12" here somwhere, there are some sweet mixes on that.
The miniseries is excellent. I have watched it a few times and always start out waiting for the sub to get sunk but then by the end Im rooting for it and the crew :D
