Im gonna do the DAS probably around Christmas time and have looking at some schools around the Glasgow area and they are wanting around £800 for 3 days or a grand for 4 days! This seems a bit steep as when I looked at it last year it was half that...? Is this about right price wise or are other places around the country much cheaper?

Also I've been looking at bikes such as the SV650 as a first bike (probably brand new and they're doing 0% finance deals just now) and noticed a dealer in England called George White who offer 2 grands worth of free kit when you buy a bike - obviously this is important to me as I have have no kit at all yet! Basically has anybody used or heard good things about this place and would it be worth my trip south for all the free stuff with it?

Did mine last year, £500 for 3 days, test early 4th morning. This was in Bristol, I guess the new test has pushed the price up but that seems quite steep.

Personally I wouldn't buy new as a first bike. You'll be bored of it very quickly and have to take a big hit on depreciation come upgrade time....probably more than you would have paid off the finance.

And whats the point when you can just get a loan for a couple of grand (if you even need to) plenty of reliable, tidy bikes for that. It also won't make you want to cry (too much) when you drop it for the first time, or low side it on the slippy xmas roads, in fact would you even want to take a brand new bike out on the salty xmas roads after you pass?

Im guessing with 2k of free goodies the bike will be full rrp (or a little more) where you can easily get em with £1500 off rrp ... so not really free . Pick yer own stuff and buy a 06 plate or summit .

Das was about £600 but with new test i have no idea of new prices

Persil

Cant go to far wrong with an SV either personaly not my cup of tea but know plenty folk that hav them and enjoy them

was looking at doing it myself pretty soon. Its £660 for a 4 day course if you already have a cbt or £750 for a 5 day course including a cbt at teh edinburgh school of motoring -

All seems like its going to be pretty pricey when factoring in the cost of insurance for a new rider as well.

Around £500, that's what I paid in Derbyshire in April 09, 3 lessons on a 500cc, then test on final day with a ½ hour lesson just before.

Never been on a bike before that apart from a year ago when I did my CBT.

George white are a decent company, know plenty who have bought from them no problem, but as said you can get kit and bike cheaper if you do the shopping.

Not sure where Bigsy did it, but there's a good place out by Bradley Stoke/Winterbourne:

Did mine there a couple of years ago and my mate did his there couple of weeks ago, decent instructors and not too bad price wise...
Yep thats where I did mine too, passed first time no problems so I guess they did something right.

My only issue (and the instructors there will agree) is it is very run down including the machinery, the cg125s were particularly bad, very old, some wouldn't idle, poor brakes etc... I went through 3 bikes on my first day (luckily they have loads).

IMO thats pretty bad, Fair enough if they are being used by Learners they will get damaged but If a bike is not safe it should be put aside and fixed asap. The company Im doing mines with are pretty good, as soon as theres a problem they get it fixed.
