I've been considering one for awhile, however ** Video link removed due to swearing **has finally made me pull the trigger.

Dashcams in the UK are not really something people talk about too much, I'm curious of the people from OCUK that use them; can you share your experiences and reviews?

Just installed a lukas lk-7900 in the car.

Records at 1080p at 60fps and it's pretty awesome. I got it because my commute is 55 miles each way and wanted the peace of mind, should something kick off. Already have footage of various morons on the roads :o

I'm waiting for the updated model that always records you doing a legal speed, indicating properly and not running a red light, rather than what you were actually doing at the time of the accident.

Is your driving sufficiently sketchy that something 'kicking off' is reasonably possible?

Why not spend the money on some driver training to help you not getinvolved in the first place?

Because you can be as well trained as possible, it doesn't stop a moron crashing into you.

Except the scams that everyone thinks are rife involve you crashing into them. People seem to have lost all sense of perspective. Whilst some are fairly elaborate they are also fairly rare, more commonly it's just morons taking advantage of those following the car in front too closely or not looking before pulling away after the car in front does. There are millions and millions of cars driving every day yet only a handful of totally unavoidable accidents so..

Further to this i would be worried that actually a dashcam would likely serve as incriminating evidence if i caused an accident myself. I would say that if anything this latter scenario is actually more likely than me falling foul of a scam.

I've got a G1W-C, was about £50 a month or so back when i bought it.

Good 1080p picture but i mostly got it as it's the first affordable dashcam using a capacitor instead of a battery, so you won't get issues of the battery overheating and failing as its sat in direct sunlight all the time.

As for if they're worth it, personally i've seen enough stuff on the road to warrant it personally. People doing overtakes around blind corners for example, no amount of defensive driving is going to help you foresee that, also a child running out from behind a van (which happened to me a few months ago) luckily i was able to do an emergency stop as i was doing less than 30 and paying attention, but if i was 10m further down the road i could have easily hit her and i'd like to think some evidence of me driving at the appropriate speed would help me out when the police want a chat about it all.

What use is a dashcam for that? That's hardly going to go 50/50 is it, it'll be obvious who was at fault.

Most accidents do not result in unfair judgements, most of them are settled fairly and the blameful party gets the hit.

Chances of accident where there is no independent witness and the other party denying fault and it not being very obvious who's fault it is vs incriminating myself.

I did think about one but I drive with errrr too much fluidity.

Exactly what i was getting at above, its a double edged sword with IMO the weighting against the owner of the camera! :p

Really? I've known quite a lot which were clearly one parties fault yet after the accident they change their story and it ends up going 50/50 as the insurance companies just don't want to fight it.

I am skeptical of the times that it won't be useful (either for, or against you).

My thinking would be that you don't declare it if you don't want to (at the event of an accident).

Additionally, even if someone declares an accident 'obvious 100% fault'; realistically there is no 100%. If you are accused of flashing to let someone out, and then they crash into you, the chances are you won't have your forensic evidence (headlight analysis) by the time it reaches dispute.

I've got two ebay jobbies (about £40 a piece IIRC) which do the job fine. HAd one in the Punto for about 3 years and one in my MX-5 for just over a year.

I've only had cause to view the footage once when I thought a chav in an Impreza had launched a bottle at me from the passenger window. With the benefit of an action replay of the event I could see that it was actually flicked up off his front tyre from the road.

If you are happy spending the money safe in the knowledge that you will probably never need it then go ahead and get one :)

"Unfortunately officer I took the card out last week and forgot to put it back." If I was injured and unable to remove the micro SD then I've got bigger things to worry about :p
