Data lost from USB stick

A friend of mine has lost some college work stored on a USB stick. Not backed up anywhere. Very foolish

The data went missing after removing the stick without safely ejecting it. Can anyone recommend any software that might be helpful in retrieving it?

Used it to help my sister out, SD card from digital camera seemed to show as empty after she did not safely remove it.

I just used the above, very successfully to recover ALL my photos off a failing external HDD, at one point the drive was completely unrecognizable, however there was an option to make an image of it and recover that way instead.
