Data-only SIM in phone for hotspotting

I've moved into a new build that won't have broadband for weeks and weeks (Virgin and the council are useless) and my mobile signal on 3 is awful throughout most of the house.

What I'm wondering is - can I buy an EE data only SIM (intended for use in a MiFi) and stick it into an old phone to use as a WiFi hotspot?

Data starts the day they dispatch and then send it economy delivery? Bit cheeky but if that's what you want, it's good enough.

Thanks guys, looks good. Not ideal about it starting the day they despatch, but it's so cheap maybe it doesn't matter.

Cheers, looks very good. I think I will be stuck to 3G but anything is better than what I have right now.

I'm using my old Xiaomi Mi2S as a mobile hotspot to take advantage of cheap data sim prices at the moment. It's a rooted phone and MIUI (its version of Android) allows you to lock down pretty much everything to stop the phone using data itself.

If you're using 3G rather than 4G, consider tethering using bluetooth rather than setting it up as a wifi hotspot. For 4G you'd lose speed but there's enough throughput on bluetooth for 3G. It brings a massive battery saving though (my Xiaomi lasts just over a day as a wi-fi hotspot - tethered by bluetooth it wlll last 3-4 days).

Only drawback I've found is, when I'm in the car it seems to cause interference with the GPS on my Samsung Galaxy Alpha - so I have to make sure it's turned off then.
