Data protection and forums

Hiya guys,

I'm having a barney with a mod on another site. And all of a sudden they claim I'm a troll as I have 3 logins. I only have one but there are other family members and staff that use that site.

I assume the mod is tying up the ip address and jumping to conclusions.

I'm going to call him out on this and ask him to provide details of these other logins with names and email addresses. Can the mod do this under data protection the forum generates an income so should be classed as a business.

Data protection only entitles you to your own details.
 
I used to be a Super Mod on a well used motoring forum & was at first amazed @ what I could see re members, not only an IP address but irrc I'd also got access to similar to what you can see on the first page of (Gibson's research Shields up) e.g with stuff xx out for my own privacy

My take on the OPs request is if the Mod of the forum is claiming he's got three accounts, then surely the OP is entitled to see what the Mod is claiming belongs to him, even if it is only @ this stage allegedly.

IP address are hardly secret information, you can hosting an image here and harvest all the IPs that show up in the server access logs. The hostname is also derived from the IP, so that's not secret either. E.g: Dns resolved 173.194.41.69 to google.com.

And the OP is not entitled to see other peoples details. IP != a person.
 
Thats what I was getting at. The mod claims the 3 accounts If I say ok show me the details and they publish the details either in an open forum or by PM they are in breach of data protection.

That might only apply to a business, chances are you're entitled to nothing.
 
I'm not bothered if they can't back it up. If they can't prove it I can kick off that they've said I have 3 logins what I'm hoping for is this Mod who's one of those no it all types who when they've run out of arguments starts name calling and becomes the grammar police shows me either publicly or privately the details of other peoples information and then I'll report her to the owners.

Its not a private forum it has adverts so brings in a revenue So must be classed as a business.
 
This happened to me on here. I got banned but it was quickly resolved once I informed a mod that my cousin used to log in to the forums sometimes whilst at my house. No big deal.

Your right. But this one is also a LTD. Maybe I should have made that more obvious. I was in a venting mood.

Sounds like a witch hunt but I'm hoping to bring this mod down a peg or two. They normally close lock delete threads that make them look stupid. If I can get them to publicly break the data protection rules then maybe she'll lay low for a while.

You wouldn't think I'm nearly 40 playing these childish games but you know when someone's been winding people up for months they just need a little reminder.

Be the bigger person and just leave it, you'll never achieve what you think you will.
 
The last time the mods checked my username against my ip address, i believe their words were "it is like looking at the year's football fixture list!"

TBH if thats your only objective, I'd just forget it, why inflame the situation & make things even worse ?

Move to another forum, Mods & Admins love high post counts ;)
