Data Recovery from a dead HDD?

Hi,

I have a Samsung 160GB HDD that has stopped working. There is a resistor of some sorts on the PCB that has burnt out...

The drive is still under warranty so getting it replaced is not a problem, but the drive has a rather big music collection on it and I was wondering is there any way of saving the data on it?

I was told that it is possible to swap the PCB to a working one and you can recover everything... Does that actually work? Where could I get hold of a matching PCB for such a task?

The old PCB swapping trick can work, but you need an identical PCB to start with and that could be the hardest part. Then there is only a limited chance of it working.

I've tried this in the past and I've had it work twice - out of maybe 10 attempts.

Either consider a professional recovery (which is not cheap) or waving it goodbye TBH
