data recovery possible?

is it possible to recover data off a hard disk drive (laptop) that has been dropped onto the floor and does not get picked up in windows most of the time?

when it does appear in my computer, the pc it's connected to grinds to a slow craw. there is also a skipping sound from the HDD.

Maybe is the best answer. They tend to play better if they're plugged in via USB2 instead I find. At least you can boot into Windows and then add the drive after.

Do a scan with getdatabackforNTFS to see what it can pick up. You may want to leave the pc alone as it's doing it. May be annoying to use the PC if it's constantly pausing because of the dodgy drive.
