Hi folks I need a recommendation for data recovery software.

I've just built a new rig for a friend who's old machine went belly up a week or so ago, it was a complete new build OS and everything else.

I thought I'd install his old HDD then use a USB stick to copy the data over to, I need to recover emails and docs etc.
I've tried installing the old HDD on the new rig and it says it needs activation form MS, I've tried to do this and they tell me it cant be reactivated, I've explained the situation to them and all they could say you need to contact customer services. As I don't need the OS (XP pro) I'm not going through all the messing about to buy a new license key as he's got a new copy of Vista installed on the new rig.

What software would you guys recommend to recover the data?

thanks

Are you trying to boot from the old drive in the new system?

Don't.

Boot from the new OS drive and Windows will see the old drive as a normal storage drive.

Thanks both, I've tried installing it as a second drive on a good system I can view stuff on the drive music docs etc but cant find emails. I'm more interested in the emails as he's got some important stuff on there.

is it outlook?

search for any .pst files on there, then import that into the new system's outlook
