Data recovery?

Hi all,

My dad asked me to format his laptop last night. It had one hard drive inside which was partitioned. I backed up all his stuff onto a single partition (not the windows one) popped in the backup CD which came with the laptop and restarted it.

Booted into the CD, it said something along the lines that formatting will wipe the hard drive clean, thinking it'd let me choose a partition to format on the next screen I clicked OK. Instead it decided to go and delete my partitions and begin formatting the whole hard drive. I saw this and quickly shut the laptop off.

Obviously it wont boot now so I can't get into windows to check see if my dads data is still there. I've tried running some partition recovery software from (http://www.partition-recovery.com/) and all it does is scan the drive and doesn't do anything else. It can see the old partitions and I can view the sectors/clusters and can see there is data still on the drive. The software wont let me rewrite the data to the hard drive though.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could get this data back?

I tried to install XP rather than use the recovery disk but the XP installer said it couldn't recognise the hard drive at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as there are some family photos on the laptop. :(

Thanks.

By the way, the laptop is a Toshiba Equium P200-1ED

Thanks again.

Thanks, Dano. You're a lifesaver :)

Wasn't able to recover the data using the laptop so I took its HDD out and put it in my PC and now I'm able to back up everything.

Last time I use a recovery disk.

Thank you again. :)

Thanks Chris too ;) lol
