I've basically got just two questions regarding Data Roaming. What is it? And do I want it enabled?

I've read a few things regarding this and it seems like it is mainly to stop people in the USA being charged by other providers when out of their own providers range.

So for the UK I'm guessing it will stop me from connecting to none Vodafone connections when out of Vodas area... but what happens when I go to Europe? Don't I need to piggy back off other providers? Will this stop me from doing so?

So basically I don't really have any idea what I'm talking about and would like clarification and advice from the almighty OCUK please :)

Switch off data roaming and you won't incur data charges when you are outside of the UK.
If you enable it then you will pay whatever international charges for data that tend to be slightly horrendous.

You wont need to roam within the UK but as soon as you go abroad you will use another provider and then will start roaming.

its best to disable roaming cos the charges are stupid!

most phones you can disable data roaming.

Data roaming in a nutshell is when you are using another networks service to get and send data ie if your in the USA then you would be using one of the networks there to send and receive data...same applies when you go to Europe as you will be roaming there as well even though some UK networks ie Tmobile for instance have their own network in Germany etc...Voda i think Spain and possibly the Netherlands etc.

Do you need it??..depends if you want to be able to send/receive emails, browse on the internet etc etc but roaming usually incurs a heavy charge for each MB...could range from £5 to £20 per MB but again depends on which network you use and what their roaming agreement with your provider is.

Usually what i do when im roaming is that i tend to pick up another sim card ie when im in Canada for instance i pop in a Rogers PAYG sim card...that way i dont get hit by any stupidly high charges when i get back to the UK...same with America...if im there i just get an AT&T sim card and use that.

Ah, so data roaming only refers to data transfer such as internet/email/mms and not phone calls/texts or an I miss understanding?

Nope doesnt include phone calls/texts but you will also incur heavy charges if you are in another country and decide to use your UK sim card to make calls or send texts.

Always best i find to unlock your phone and just use the country that your going one of their networks sim cards...most countries do PAYG.

Ok I get it now, so with data roaming off I can just do things the old school way and use my phone to make calls whilst abroad if it's cheap enough.

Thanks guys, I guess I was just after whether I needed data roaming enabled in order to make calls whilst not in th UK.
