After setting up my home server with 2 x 3TB WD reds, I am trasfering data from my pc to the server at painful 5.0MB/s. The home server is connected directly to the router, whilst the pc is connected to the network via homeplug.

I am transfering 1TB of data in small chunk at a time.

Anything I could try?

I had this same problem with homeplugs. I managed to get a paltry 8MB/s out of them, speed is down to the electrical wiring in your house. I would either suggest getting the PC wired in or use a decent .ac setup. I have a server which is hardwired into the router so I get full 1Gbps. The upstairs PC is connected through wirless .ac and I get about 40MB/s. Router is an Asus AC87U and the adapter is an Asus USB AC56.

5MB/s = 40Mb/s, obvious culprit would be the homeplugs
bog standard wifi n dongle should get you connected at 70Mb/s, (dependent upon signal etc)

...waiting for Bledd to suggest hardwiring...

Well that's a pitty.

Something this size is a one off anyway. In my old house I didn't get full download speed via the homeplugs, in the new house I do, so figfured the wiring was much better and it may have just been someadjustments in the o/s.

It depends on the file sizes, but on large files I'd be surprised if I wasn't getting over 100MB/s unless I had IO issues at either end.

Oh and yes, hardware it.

I can get 110 MB/s through my Gigabit switches at home. However, most of the time I'm transferring to or from my file server, which means FlexRAID's storage pool driver slows things down a lot and I get maybe 40 MB/s.

I wish I had time to find an alternate solution to drive pooling.
