I know a number of people have had the problem since back in 2005 and Valve insist its not a Steam problem although from what I've read it only ever happens for people playing games on the Steam platform.

Anyway to cut a long story short, after quite a while of researching I've found that I'm one of the unfortunate people that is having this problem. I was wondering if any of you have come across a fix of some kind, or maybe some kind of work-around?

Try deleting all the files in the steam directory apart from steam.exe and the steamapps folder and running steam again.

Tried that lots of times, Tried deleting clientregistry.blob, Reinstalled it all a gagillion times, sent Valve all the information they wanted about 6-7 months ago had very little support in reply. I've done it all, even down to scraping the barrel and seeing if things like playing with the original discs help or not aswell as removing firewalls etc.

Technically their right, it's not a Steam problem - it's a problem with the Source Engine.

What's your hardware configuration, are you using all the latest drivers and have you formatted since having this problem?

You could perhaps try (with Steam closed) deleting the Half-Life 2 related folders in the Steamapps\<your username>\ folder and let the game recreate it next time you run it. The datacache.dll files are located in any source games bin folder within your usernames folder. Also take a look at the last post in this link as he claims to have fixed his problem - http://www.halflife2.net/forums/archive/index.php/t-124481.html.

I have formatted numerous times since the problem, I had motherboard failures a few months back. (that was a nightmare)

I've deleted the game files in various different ways, I also get the same crash when downloading source games so recreating/reinstalling is painful aswell, and you're right it is only source games that does it.

I'll check out that link now, thanks very much.

Edit: Bah, link didnt fix it, 2 crashed to desktop, 2 complete system crashes.

Could you post your system specs? (CPU, Motherboard, Graphics card etc.) As you said you've had this problem since 2005 have you had the same components since then (except for the motherboard change which you mentioned - did you find the cause of the motherboard failures by the way?)?

Apart from these source crashes is your system unstable when playing other games, do you often get crashes? Could you also post the error messages your getting if possible.

I havent had this problem since 05, its been a known issue since then, I've had it 6-7 months since changing motherboards, ram and numerous other components.

Intel Dual Core 2 6600 @ 2.4ghz
2gb DDR2 Ram
ASRock 4CoreDual-SATA2 Socket 775 8 Channel Audio AGP PCI-E ATX Mobo
Radeon 9800xt :(

Motherboard failures were booting issues, there was a fault with one of the hard-drive plugs on the board side. All my other games are stable, some other steam games crash with various errors (allot less than source games though), but all my non-steam games run perfectly. My computer rarely crashes apart from above problems.

I can post a minidump report if you wish, the only other error info is what I can get from the generic "This program has crashed" window, which is basically all here apart from the jargon but I can paste that to if it'll help you help me. :)

Sorry I misread your first post.

Only reason I asked about the motherboard was incase there was some underlying hardware problem but as you say everything else is stable it's probably safe to say it's not going to be that.

Feel free to email me some of the minidumps, I'm no expert at reading them but I'll certainly take a look for you and see if they shed any light as to what is causing the problem. (my emails in my trust)
