Hi there!

Ok, i'm not computer stupid, but this one has really stumped me.
I don't know if this is software, hardware... or what, i'd really love your help figuring this puzzle out.
First thing, my PC is my pride and joy, i'm a computer science student.. I work with it every day, I need it and I look after it.

I took my PC home for Christmas, plugged it in, turned it on.
I was told there was a bad checksum when it started.
I went into the bios, loaded my previous overclock profile which has always been stable, pressed save and close, it booted and it was fine. I put it down to maybe a whole load of new USBs connected etc.

Then...
My game crashes. I restart, see the same message. I worry a bit, do the same... it crashes again, I re-start, take off the overclock, and all seems fine.

I come back to uni, no overclock... boot it up, it's fine until it crashes. I'm now a bit stumped. Restart, no problems.
Then... I start it again, some icons in the task bar are invisible

I have no overclock, this is weird.

Then... I see my data says 28/12/3119
Uh hu?
I try to click it to change it, but it crashes.. so I go back into the bios and set the time right.
I restart, some icons still missing, but the time is right.

My only recent(ish) change are my new 6850 cards which replaced my single 4870.

So... any ideas why my PC is literally, just playing up and being really weird? I'm trying to link the issues, but... I just don't know how!

Any ideas?
Thanks so much!
Steve

I'm temped to say it might be the cmos battery not charging right. The bad sum check error often happens when it ain't charging. Normally when it goes bad the bios defaults every time.

They are fairly cheap so might be worth trying anyway?

I was also coming to that conclusion Crowort, I really appreciate your feedback and so I will do this anyway to rule it out.

Although,.. I've now been keeping an eye on the time/date, and something extremely strange has just happened.

I have been using windows, not turned the PC off ( I may have logged out + in, but not turned it off so the battery should be ok )... and checked again...
Now my date is 29/12/7110

Of course, this causes ENDLESS issues, licenses popping up, google chrome telling me website certificates are out of date... etc etc.

I wonder why on earth this is happening?
Maybe I have more than one problem on my hands, I think bad checksum issue is the battery, i'll give that a shot,.. but the time and date... no idea

Ok, the plot thickens...

So, I update it from the windows server which is automatically there...
I see this:

I see the same error with time.nist.gov

You must have passed through some temporal anomaly on your way home.

You say you've removed the overclock, but have you tried loading default values?

Yep, I loaded default values to remove my overclock. - Thanks!

I feel so refreshed after my 7000 day sleep!
Haha, I never thought the date and time would cause as many issues as it does, but I now get messages saying security certificates are out of date on every page etc.

Anyway, that's a huge help, thanks for your advice!
Do you know where I can find one? I had a quick google but it didn't come up with much, is there a place which specialises in them?
Also, surely this shouldn't happen after only having the motherboard for a year and a half? It's an MSI X58M. If they're expensive, maybe I should complain to MSI?

They cost about a quid. Almost all boards use cr2032 batteries. Might be worth just checking what it says on it on your board but it is almost always a cr2032. Googling that will show you the right type.

Give the battery a change,

Take out the HDD and scan it on another machine for viruses/malware (you never know).

How did you travel with the computer when you went back home? Was it anywhere it could have been knocked around?
