My daughter has my old D70, which seems to be throwing up memory card access errors quite often now.... So perhaps time to give her an upgrade, (she's 21 this year

It has the 18-70 original kit lens which seems quite good, but I have the thought it focuses using the body with the little drive shaft ?
So what replacement body would be good..... Used D90 ? Or is the D5100 an option ? She also has a 70-300 Sigma Apo, which I need to check how that works........ Budget is limited, but she is pretty good, shows me up some times... :( So worth getting something reasonable.

The D90 would be my recommendation. The D5100 is more modern, but has a smaller more plasticy body then the D70. It also won't auto focus lenses that lack a built in motor (which might include the Sigma 70-300, there are two versions, one with one without).

D90 looks the way to go, also noticed it's a touch smaller than the D70, which will be appreciated.
Is it worth getting the 18-105VR as well to replace the 18-70 ?

If you can pick It cheap then yes, it's a pretty good kit lense and the VR is very useful.
