I've just came accross this portfolio of Photographer Dave Hill. I thought I'd share it:

Amazing work in my opinion!

Although, the real reason I started this thread was because I'm really interested in finding out what techniques this Photographer uses to achieve this "style". As you can see, the photo's look almost unreal, like CGI. Anyone know, have any ideas or suggestions behind how this guy achieves this look? Would it be down to super photoshop work, or more to do with the camera and Photography techniques used?

The clarify and high pass sharpening tools in corel XI give similar effects as the photos of the guy on the slide and the car out side the barber shop. My guess is the photos like the guy on the bridge have been edited in photoshop somehow, not sure of the technique though.
 
A couple of them look like a mixture of HDR and some sort of sketch tool to turn the image into a drawing. I'll have a look see what I can find...
 
ive always wanted to know how the CGi effect is done, would it involve some use of HDR and extreme tone mapping.
 
The photographer has a long thread on the Canon forums explaining how it's done - i'll post the link once I get home.
From memory the technique is called virtual painting and takes a lot of practice to perfect. There is no quick filter to run - you need to paint each stoke yourself by mouse :)

He has several DVD's for sale that teach you the technique, they start from around £100.

I think the comments on the Canon forums were that it's possible to replicate the general effect quite easily using various image editor effects but to get the fine details as in Dave's images is only possible using his technique.

'really can't share much about specifics, and I'm not a photoshop guru, but I am definitely down to discuss. I haven't used HDR or that tone-mapping stuff. I just recently heard about it, and it seems you need to bracket your images to do it well. That would be almost impossible when shooting humans! :-) In terms of cameras, depending on the budget, I use canon digitals and H1's; all prime lenses. Canons are SOOO fun and easy to shoot with, but the H1 files are crisp, edge to edge, and print bigger. Kinda a trade off. I'm a big fan of using lights, and I'd say the primary factor of how my images look is the lighting setup. Photoshop is of course crucial as well, but you gotta have a clean raw file to begin with. Too much processing can give you nasty digital grain, halos, all that stuff, which may look good on Flickr, but when printed on paper for a portfolio that an art director sees, looks like junk. I would totally suggest that new photogs spend less time on PS and more time shooting and playing with lights, and learning how to direct their subjects. As to the comment about $50k shoots... haha... that made me laugh. For sure my budgets have been getting bigger, but a lot of the stuff on my site paid peanuts. You really have to work your butt off; lots of sweat, set-building, hauling lights all over the place, day after day, for at least a few years etc. But that's part of the adventure, right!?'
 
Well my copy of XI came a day early so i thought i would have a go as promised. Took about 10minutes. I can't get the hair right, goes a horrid colour. Enjoy the gorgeous eva :p
