David Cameron has signalled that he intends to ban strong encryption — putting the British government on a collision course with some of the biggest tech companies in the world.

As reported by Politics.co.uk, the British Prime Minister reaffirmed his commitment to tackling strong encryption products in Parliament on Monday in response to a question.

Strong encryption refers to the act of scrambling information in such a way that it cannot be understood by anyone — even law enforcement with a valid warrant, or the software company itself — without the correct key or password.

It's currently used in some of the most popular tech products in the world, including the iPhone, WhatsApp, and Facebook. But amid heightened terrorism fears, David Cameron is attempting to take action.

"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens: as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone." - David Cameron.

Well done conservative voters. Snoopers Charter is back with vengeance and now this.

I don't understand why the big US tech companies don't want to help the security services stop terror attacks across the world?

Terrorism is rapidly becoming the world biggest excuse top break down civil liberties. Considering how little it actually affects us in daily life, rare and actual attacks notwithstanding, many of the measures are just unnecessary imo.

The rhetoric of "not allowing a safe space for terrorists to communicate" is complete ********.

Terrorists can communicate using a book cipher or pick from any of a huge number of other options. The kind of terrorists we should actually be concerned about (competent ones) will already use extra measures such as this in conjunction with strong encryption.

This is totalitarianism.

That's because terrorist attacks are occurring more frequently, on a larger scale and increasingly sadistic. In short, they're doing doing more damage to us.

No it isn't lol. Yes there are other, older means of encryption that the bad guys could use but none as convenient as modern communications methods. The more complicated it is to encrypt/decrypt a message the the greater the liklehood of them making a mistake.

They do, they would just prefer it if you didn't know about it.

If there were back doors into encryption systems, after authorities used it a couple times it would quickly become common knowledge.

Reputation of company and said encryption would be destroyed.
