Daytime running lights.

For it.

I always drive about in the Elise with my lights on. It just helps other drivers see you.

Running lights, yes, main lights, no point.

Useful (think Canada have it) that any car with the ignition on has its running lighs on, gives you more warning if there is a chance a car could pull out from the side of the road at random.

Fair enough to these people who drive with their sidelights on in the day, but for the love of god, nothing angers me more than the people who have their driving lights on in broad daylight because the "look cool".

I'm talking about lights in the bumpers, like on the 205GTI and many other cars. They're for really bad lighting conditions, not driving up my arse and blinding me at 3 o clock on a Wednesday.

Can't say I'm too bothered about it, providing we don't end up with the situation they have in the US where cars have to have bright orange lights at each corner, ruining the looks.

My headlights always go on (have done for years) - it's part of my startup sequence, along with seatbelt etc. See and be seen. If you're going to put your sidelights on you may as well put the headlights on, it's only going to make you more visible.

against!
if you can't see a car in daylight, then get of the road. Also it's used for bikers, who you can miss in daylight. Having there lights on brings attention. But if everyone has them on it defeats the point.

Interesting one this, and I'm going to raise a point i've seen from experience.

Whilst I believe its a good idea (Nordic countries all cars have their lights on in daylight hours), over here its not 'law' as such, and it can work against you in the following way.

Daylight, you are driving around with your side lights on. You are involved in an accident. Its noted that your lights are on. The other parties insurance company will fight that corner that you were not confidentally able to see where you were going, had your lights on and so the accident is more than possible your fault.

I've seen it happen unfortunately on more than one occassion.

This is subject of course to the other party raising this point with their insurers.

EDIT: On another note, its possible to spot an unmarked Volvo police car as they dont have their lights on all the time.

...What?

I do in the car, because I started off on bikes and it's a habbit. I just pop the side lights on. Especially this time of year. It's dull, it's dirty and the rain is distracting sometimes. Anything to help others see me.

At least I've made an effort with safety as I've seen to many nasty accidents to not want be in anything as serious myself.

That website seems a bit one sided. Im not sure but I would have thought only side lights not full lights would be the law. Side lights aren't gonna distract you from seeing a bloody crossing now are they?

Two insurance cases I saw where the person who had thier side lights on was to blame for the accident because they were deemed a danger to the road if they needed lights in daytime to see where they were going.

I wish it wasnt true, but it is :(

can't turn then off on the ZX10R

used to have my Xeons on all the time in my M3 as people see you sooner coming up on the outside lane and move out the way

Sidelights do not help anybody to see where they are going - they produce about 5 watts of light.
