Daytime running lights.

Perhaps they just have their headlights adjusted too high. I had a friend follow me along a dual carriageway once and it was clear that his headlights were set too high because each time he went over a minor bump in the road, it looked like he was flashing his lights at me in the mirror. Quite distracting.

After 3/4 O Clock I run with my sidelights on anyway, and mornings also...

I think its a good idea.. although most people round here seem to do it anyway..

As said above, this is perfect for bikers, I'm all for them having headlights on, but as for car drivers, I see no point. I agree with what someone said above, you you need a car to have its headlights on for you to see it, then there's something far wrong and you shouldn't be driving in the first place.

If they want to go for side lights during the day the no objections from me, although I think it is pointless. Dipped headlights I would object to though. The amount of cars that have badly adjusted headlights with the new brighter than bright xenon bulbs is unbelieveable. I know I find they make my driving experience uncomfortable (I know I'm not the only person that finds this - although I don't think it is the case for everyone). If I thought it would really help road saftey then I might concede to wearing sunglasses most of the time - surely that defeats the object though?

I'm generally for it - as has been mentioned by other people anything that helps vehicles to be seen can only be a good thing. It may also reduce accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists - perhaps not only because they will spot cars better but also because they will be less inclined to step out in front of a car with lights on in daylight! (it has worked on me in the past, something to do with altering your depth perception...)

But I am most in favour of it as it would mean that the numptys who drive around with no lights on in dull/misty/foggy/dusk/downright near total darkness with no lights on at all would at least have to have them on for when those situations occurred - this syndrome seems to be especially prevalent amongst people driving dark (silver/grey/blue/black) cars - i.ei. those that are particularly difficult to spot in such gloomy conditions

good topic, i would just like to say it angers me immensely these people that drive round with there lights on in the middle of the day, ok you have the cars that turn them on automatically, but i cant help this whole thing is part of the "i am doing the speedlimit and my lights are on so i cant possibly be doing anything wrong" even tho in reality i cant drive for ****, leading onto these people that hover in the middle lane of motorways, cause accidents and generally bring the standard of driving on roads today down.

I often have my lights on when it's anything other than very bright. This of course has everything to do with safety and nothing to do with how cool I think Angel Eyes and Xenons look. Honest.

Two insurance cases I saw where the person who had thier side lights on was to blame for the accident because they were deemed a danger to the road if they needed lights in daytime to see where they were going.

I wish it wasnt true, but it is :(
What if one person was driving a volvo with lights on as standard you twonk, the ruddy police use them so im sure if there was an issue then they wouldnt!

No but every single other volvo on the street has lights on all the time doesnt it, so im sure there are plenty of insurance cases with a volvo involved and if the lights were an issue with claims the media would have brought it up by now!

if you can't see a car in daylight, then get of the road. Also it's used for bikers, who you can miss in daylight. Having there lights on brings attention. But if everyone has them on it defeats the point.

second that , wasn't their a big rally in paris because the french goverment were trying to do this, but the bikers complained(rightly to)

I really don't see why, I use them when they are needed, if its daytime sidelights or lights really arn't going to help me anymore for seeing masses of metal moving towards me... but yea i can kinda see why for bikes, brings attention to them. For me i use sidelights in the morning at times, as its usually still not the brightest plus everyone is just awake, but once again i only use them when I decide they are needed.

In the celica no.... it looks better with the lights down :p

anything else.. i couldnt really care.

If YOU can't see a car in daylight then yes, maybe you should get off the road. However, that's not the point. Running headlights allows you to be seen more easily by anyone else, thus reducing your chances of 'being missed' or having someone, for example, pull out on you because they've not observed properly.
It's the same principle for cars as it is for bikes.
For the sake as reaching over and moving a switch I struggle to grasp why anyone wouldn't just do it  It's a no-brainer and common sense, surely?

It very common over here in Ireland to drive with the light on, there was a big ad campaign in the paper's about it being safer.

doesnt matter what time of day i drive i always have my headlights on, if some idiot pulls out and i hit him it will be harder for him to argue the "but i didnt see him" defense.

I just want to make it easier for people to see me at all times.

We do however need more enforcement of idiots and their fog/spot lights. Having your spots on is annoying enough when you drive towards me, but if your car is so pants that it cant have the front fogs on without having the rear on too you need a slap!

I sometimes find that in bright sunshine its not as noticable when a cars brakelights come on if its got its headlights/sidelights on. Especially if the bulbs are past their best and it hasn't got a third brakelight.

Other than that I wouldn't be too fussed if I had to have my lights on 24/7.
