Hi guys,

Quick one really, I know Teg's are pretty harsh, hardcore tonka toys that can go round corners pretty well.

Basically it's a contender for a next car but I have a couple of questions

1) I drive to and around South London/London 2-4 times a week, it's 30 miles each way with whatever town driving in between...now I'm pretty damn tolerable when it comes to crashy bumpy cars but is this driving likely to put me off? or would I be right in assuming the above makes up for when you take it to a back road?

2) Is 7k enough to get a good one?

3) What should I look out for when viewing one?

4) Whilst I know it's criminal would it be possible to swap the seats for say, EP3 seats? (just the fronts)

5) What typically goes wrong on them?

Thanks all :)
Jake

They drive like a Civic in all honesty, very easy to drive around town as you would expect. The standard Recaro seats are comfortable and supportive, you'll be surprised. Standard suspension is supple and not crash at all. Think of the car as a Civic without any sound proofing and you're not too far from the mark.

£7k should get you a very nice car indeed, that's clean 98 Spec JDM money so no problems there.

Look for the following when you go to view one; arch rust on the rears, spreading down onto the sills behind the side skirts, crunches from the gearbox at high RPM changes, blue smoke on gear change, ask the owner about how much oil it uses, check for perished rear trailing arm bushes, bolster wear on the seats, ohh and obviously service history.

They are generally reliable, although the problems above are the usual ones. Remember even the newest examples are getting on a bit, this is not to say it's an excuse to have a shabby car.

Keep the standard Recaros, the EP3 ones are horrible in comparison. The only ones that come close are the anniversary edition ones but even then I prefer the standard DC2 ones.

Find someone either on here or itr-dc2 to give you a spin in theirs.

I find it a pita to drive around town personally, had to visit 9 Schools in Newport (crap roads, little alleys all over the place)

It is great fun to drive on proper roads though :)

7k is the top end bracket tbh.. You can find very nice examples from £4500 upwards

At over 10 years old, it will either need a full re-bush or find one that has already had that done, as neil says, check rear arch rust and gearbox + gear changes in vtec

The jdm models come without an immobiliser (I think), so get one with an aftermarket alarm, they're apparently very easy to steal

Well I went in Neils Red one before a deer ran out infront of it, I just remember thinking "**** ME!!!" when I was in it, and wanting one ever since :D was at an MM to, so the roads were lovely!

Have fun with the insurance!

I pay under £700 @ 24 with 7yrs no claims. Not bad at all for the performance. Try Brentacre, very helpful and all mods are covered as long as you don't go over 220bhp (impossible without FI), plus no admin fees when adding bits during the policy.

I've only been an onwer for a short while, and really haven't had time to drive it that much. Currently having teh gearbox rebult as I got the crunchies. Probably one of the biggest expenses to look out for, and buying a car with a rebuilt box should be up on the list of priorities.

It is very hard and bumpy, but tbh I really don't care and find it comfortable enough. Although I did HAVE to stop on the way down to the Hampshire meet (2hr drive) as one of my legs started to go funny and my buttocks hurt. But that was boring motorway driving, and driving it out on the open roads helps you to ignore that.

As you must have already felt, VTEC enage, the noise, speed and sheer bonkersness is a sure pleaser every time you drive it.

Don't even think of spending £7k, and I certainly wouldn't spend more than £5.5k on one. For that you will get one in great nick, 70k or less, but you might have to wait for the right one to come up. Spending money on new bushes (£300-500 in parts plus possibly the same in labour) would be a good idea, possibly new dampers/springs (MeisterR @ £550), and new OEMish brakes (ebc standards + axxiss/hawk pads ~ £350 front+rear) should be on the main list of things to do. POssibly consider a Tegwia replica Mugen intake, but tuning a B18C is very expensive and you get sweet FA in terms of HP increase per £.

Wrong side of London for me for test drive unfortunately, otherwise I could have detoured and picked you up for a drive in a week as I'm off down to Hampshire to pickup my car.

The odd pic of mine in the Hampshire meet pic thread.

Boring looking common breadvan tbh, Teg > EP3 :D

Thanks Ad, am noting all this down :)

7k was just a budget, not a target. Spose I could spend the rest on shiny bits and lots and lots of fuel!

I know they are a performance car, but what are they like in fuel out of curiosity? :)

How old are you?

Mine is I think £600, but I was ill at renewal time and wasn't in the mood for shopping around, I've seen quotes for around £450 for me.

26, 4 years ncb. I do live in the best postcode mind..

Here's my fuel log..

http://bleddyn.co.uk/forums/itrdc2/fuelusage.png

Average MPG : 28.80
Pounds per mile AVG : £0.18
Average miles per 40L : 253.38
Average miles per litre : 6.33

Total Miles : 12376
Total Litres : 1953.71

The fuel tank is 50L, but the light comes on when there's around 10L left, so I'd call 40L a full tank

Get signed up if you can't get onto that. She is a member on the forum and the car looks nice.

Fuel isn't bad, but I have yet to brim the tank and actually note down the mileage. But it all comes down to how much madness in VTEC you do. That really does eat the fuel, but as I have said, I haven't looked at it properly. Plus I use mine as an evening/weekend car as I commute to London on the train each day.

Going by posts on the forum they arn't bad at all and I'm sure you could manage 30-35mg on a long slow motorway cruise with some VTEC thrown in. Before I forget, they really need proper warming up before VTECing, which can be a pain if you're only going on a short trip :p

Hard to put across how well they handle, just soo well poised and really make you feel confident and glued to the road :D

On my recent 175 mile journey back from Cadwell Park I managed to get just shy of 40 MPG sitting at 80 mph. They're great on fuel when driven easily.

Wow, thats impressive :) - It's between one of these or an S3.

Both massively different, both good in their own way :)

I'm keeping an eye on this thread. Since selling my MR2 and driving an Escort 1.8 Ghia for a few months I've been craving to own a good car again. The Teg is in a my list along with the Civic R and S2000.

If you take the standard recaros out the dc2 o will hunt you down and castrate you! They are so much better than the standard ep3 seats. I had mine for 2 years, no issues and loved absolutely every minute of it. Think 7k is a bit much to pay for one, id be ooking around 5 max.6 k for a good example.

Don't like the look of the DC5, JDM DC2 please, yummy! :)

Only reason I said about the seats is I do use the car socially, and whilst I may find the seats comfortable, a lot of people won't :p

Jdm all the way I love dc2s I would love one but as I won't be able to afford until I'm earning serious dollar I wonder if I would still want one after owning what I hope to be my next car, a mr2 turbo

If you take your hands to the Recaros, I will Vtec over those hands of yours as punishment!

They are awesome seats and do the job perfectly. Back seats are fine too.
